Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  3. Disable the SIR. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Remove the console. Refer to Console Replacement .
  5. Remove the instrument panel center trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Center Trim Panel Replacement .
  6. Remove the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment or Navigation Display Module Replacement .
  7. Remove the AC/heater control head. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  8. Remove the passenger side sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side or Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side .
  9. Remove the instrument panel endcaps. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .
  10. Remove the side window air outlets. Refer to Side Window Air Outlet Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  11. Remove the instrument panel upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  12. Remove the defroster grille. Refer to Defroster Grille Replacement .
  13. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .

  15. Disconnect the body to instrument panel electrical connectors (1) at the top outside corners of the instrument panel.
  16. Disconnect the HVAC harness electrical connector near the blower motor.
  17. Disconnect the radio antenna lead-in connector.
  18. Disconnect the cigar lighter/ashtray lamp harness retainer push pin from bracket.
  19. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  20. Disconnect the front parking brake cable housing from the parking brake pedal assembly. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.

  22. Remove the instrument panel center support bracket fasteners (1) to floor bracket.

  23. Object Number: 105533  Size: SH
  24. Remove the fasteners (1) from the steering column support bracket to the instrument panel carrier.

  26. Remove the instrument panel carrier (1) to cowl fasteners.

  27. Object Number: 105542  Size: SH
  28. Remove the 6 fasteners (2) from the instrument panel carrier to hinge pillar.
  29. Remove the instrument panel carrier from the vehicle.
  30. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim panel. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  31. Remove the passenger side inflator module from the instrument panel retainer. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  32. Remove the driver side trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Left Side or Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Right Side .
  33. Remove the instrument panel cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  34. Remove the passenger side instrument panel trim plate from the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Right Side or Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Left Side .
  35. Remove the ignition switch from the instrument panel. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
  36. Remove the fog lamp switch. Refer to Fog Lamp Switch Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  37. Remove the fuel door/rear compartment release switch. Refer to Fuel/Rear Compartment Release Switch Replacement .
  38. Remove the instrument panel storage compartment from the instrument panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  39. Remove the fasteners retaining the instrument panel retainer to the carrier.
  40. Partially remove the instrument panel retainer from the carrier.
  41. Guide the wiring through the openings.

  42. Disconnect the inside air temperature sensor electrical connector.
  43. Complete the instrument panel retainer removal.

  44. Remove the inside temperature sensor from the instrument panel retainer. Refer to Inside Air Temperature Sensor Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  45. Disconnect the park lock cable from the instrument panel. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T80-E.
  46. Remove the A/C temperature sensors from the left and right air distribution duct. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Temperature Sensor Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  47. Remove the fasteners retaining the left and right air distribution duct.
  48. Remove the ducts.

  49. Remove the fasteners from the left and right side window defroster ducts.
  50. Remove the ducts.

  51. Remove the theft deterrent module and mounting bracket from the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement in Theft Deterrent.
  52. Remove the park brake assembly from the carrier. Refer to Parking Brake Lever Pedal Assembly Replacement in Park Brake.
  53. Remove the instrument panel wiring harness from the instrument panel carrier.

  55. Remove the slip bracket fasteners (1).
  56. Remove the slip brackets (2) from the instrument panel carrier.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 502513  Size: SH
  1. Install the slip brackets (2) to the instrument panel carrier.
  2. Loosely install the slip bracket fasteners (1).

  3. Install the instrument panel wiring harness to the instrument panel carrier.
  4. Install the park brake assembly to the carrier. Refer to Parking Brake Lever Pedal Assembly Replacement in Park Brake.
  5. Install the theft deterrent module and mounting bracket to the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement in Theft Deterrent.
  6. Install the left and right side window defroster ducts.
  7. Install the defroster duct fasteners.
  8. Install the left and right air distribution ducts.
  9. Install the air distribution duct fasteners.
  10. Install the A/C temperature sensors to the left and right air distribution duct. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Temperature Sensor Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  11. Connect the park lock cable to the instrument panel. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T80-E.
  12. Install the inside temperature sensor to the instrument panel retainer. Refer to Inside Air Temperature Sensor Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  13. Partially install the instrument panel retainer.
  14. Connect the inside air temperature sensor electrical connector.

  15. Guide the wiring through the openings.
  16. Complete instrument panel retainer Installation.
  17. Install the instrument panel retainer to the instrument panel carrier fasteners.
  18. Install the instrument panel storage compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  19. Install the fuel door/rear compartment release switch. Refer to Fuel/Rear Compartment Release Switch Replacement .
  20. Install the fog lamp switch. Refer to Fog Lamp Switch Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  21. Install the ignition switch to the instrument panel. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
  22. Install the passenger side instrument panel trim plate to the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Right Side or Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Left Side .
  23. Install the instrument panel cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  24. Install the driver side trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Left Side or Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Right Side .
  25. Install the passenger side inflator module to the instrument panel retainer. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  26. Install the instrument panel cluster trim panel to the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .

  27. Object Number: 105542  Size: SH
  28. Install the instrument panel carrier to the vehicle.
  29. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  30. Install the fasteners (2) from the instrument panel carrier to hinge pillar.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the instrument panel carrier nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  32. Install the instrument panel carrier to cowl fasteners (1).
  33. Tighten
    Tighten the carrier to cowl fasteners to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  34. Tighten the previously installed fasteners to the slip brackets.
  35. Tighten
    Tighten the bracket fasteners to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  36. Install the fasteners (1) from the steering column support (2) to the instrument panel carrier.
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  38. Install the instrument panel center support bracket fasteners (1) to the floor bracket.
  39. Tighten
    Tighten the instrument panel center support bracket fasteners to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  40. Connect the front parking brake cable housing to the parking brake pedal assembly. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.
  41. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  42. Connect the cigar lighter/ashtray lamp harness retainer push pin to the retaining bracket.
  43. Connect the radio antenna lead-in connector.
  44. Connect the HVAC harness electrical connector.

  46. Connect the body to instrument panel electrical connectors (1) at top outside corners of instrument panel.
  47. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  48. Install the defroster grille. Refer to Defroster Grille Replacement .
  49. Install the instrument panel upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  50. Install the side window air outlets. Refer to Side Window Air Outlet Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  51. Install the instrument panel endcaps. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .
  52. Install the passenger side sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side or Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side .
  53. Install the AC/heater control head. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  54. Install the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment or Navigation Display Module Replacement .
  55. Install the instrument panel center trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Center Trim Panel Replacement .
  56. Install the console. Refer to Console Replacement .
  57. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  58. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
