Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Set the park brake.
  3. Remove the front floor console trim plate. Refer to Front Floor Console Trim Plate Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  4. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

  5. Object Number: 161223  Size: SH
  6. Remove the shift control right side wiring harness from the shift control.

  7. Object Number: 161220  Size: SH
  8. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the shift control. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .

  9. Object Number: 161222  Size: SH
  10. Remove the shift control left side wiring harness from the shift control.
  11. Remove the park lock cable from the shift control. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement .

  12. Object Number: 161218  Size: SH
  13. Remove the shift control nuts.
  14. Remove the shift control.

  16. Use a small flat-bladed tool in order to remove the shift control handle retainer (1).
  17. Remove the shift control handle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the shift control handle, if removed.

  2. Object Number: 289502  Size: SH
  3. Install the shift control handle retainer (1).

  4. Object Number: 289503  Size: SH
  5. Shift control handle retainer (1) installed INCORRECTLY.
  6. Important: Install the shift control in NEUTRAL. If the shift control is inadvertently moved to PARK, press the transmission shift lock solenoid lever on the shifter in order to shift to Neutral. Remove the shift lever release cover in order to access the lever if the console is installed and the shift control is inadvertently moved to PARK.

  7. Shift the control lever into NEUTRAL.

  9. Install the shift control.
  10. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the shift control nuts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the shift control nuts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  13. Install the park lock cable to the shift control. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement .
  14. Adjust the park lock cable. Refer to Park Lock Cable Adjustment .

  16. Install the shift control left side wiring harness.
  17. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the shift control. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .
  18. Adjust the automatic transaxle range selector cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .

  20. Install the shift control right side wiring harness.
  21. Install the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
