Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift
Assembly Procedure
Tools Required
J 23073-01 Shift Tube Installer
- Install the gear shift bowl shroud (1).
- Install the gear shift bowl assembly (2).
- Lubricate with synthetic grease. Install the shift lever spring (3).
- Install the 2 thrust washers (4).
- Install the wave washer (5).
- Install the lock plate (6).
- Install the 2 thrust washers (4).
- Install the shift tube retaining ring (8).
- Install the shift tube assembly (1)
using J 23073-01
.
- Install the shift lever gate (1).
- Install the 2 oval head cross recess screws (6).
- Install the steering column housing support assembly (4)
with the dimmer switch assembly (3) still connected.
- Install the 4 torx head screws (2).
- Apply lithium grease to the exposed shaft
engagement areas (1) and then install the steering shaft assembly (2).
- Install the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
- Install 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
Tighten
Tighen the screws to 5.5 N·m(49 lb in).
- If no sensor is present, install the
bearing retainer (1).
- Install the lower bearing seat (3).
- Install the lower bearing spring (2).
- Install the lower spring retainer (1).
- Perform the following steps if the Hi
Res sensor is present.
• | Install the sensor adapter (1). |
• | Install the hi res steering wheel position sensor (2). |
• | Install the retainer sensor (3). |
• | Install the steering shaft seal (4). |
- If no sensor is present, install the
steering shaft seal.
- Install the seal retaining bushing (1).
- Install the lower spring retainer (1).
- Install the electrical BTSI actuator assembly. Refer to
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the ignition switch assembly. Refer to
Ignition Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the steering column housing assembly. Refer to
Steering Column Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the shift lever assembly. Refer to
Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle
.
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Floor Shift
Assembly Procedure
- Install the steering column
houisng support assembly (3) with the dimmer switch rod (2)
connected.
- Apply lithium grease to
the exposed shaft engagement areas (1) and then install the steering
shaft assembly (2).
- Install the steering shaft
assembly.
- Install the adapter and
bearing assembly (1).
- Install 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Tighten
Tighen the screws to 5.5 N·m (49 lb in).
- If no sensor present,
install the bearing retainer (1).
- Install the lower bearing
seat (3).
- Install the lower bearing spring (2).
- Install the lower spring retainer (1).
- Perform the following
steps if the Hi Res sensor is present.
• | Install the sensor adapter (1). |
• | Install the hi res steering wheel position sensor (2). |
• | Install the retainer sensor (3). |
• | Install the steering shaft seal (4). |
- If no sensor is present,
install the steering shaft seal (1).
- Install the seal retaining
bushing (1).
- Install the lower spring retainer (1).
- Install the ignition switch assembly. Refer to
Ignition Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the steering column housing assembly. Refer to
Steering Column Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the hazard knob.
