Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

  1. If the inboard friction surface of the brake rotor is not accessible, reposition and support the caliper with the brake pads. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement or to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement as applicable.
  2. Clean the friction surfaces of the brake rotor with denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake cleaner.

  3. Object Number: 693340 Size: SH
  4. Using a micrometer calibrated in thousandths-of-a-millimeter, or ten-thousanths-of-an-inch, measure and record the thickness of the brake rotor. Measure the thickness of the rotor at 4 or more points equally spaced around the rotor. Position the micrometer at the same distance from the outside edge of the rotor, in the brake pad lining contact area.
  5. Compare the measurements to the following specifications:
  6. Specifications

        • The minimum thickness of the front brake rotors with the 1.8L LAY Engine is 19.0 mm (0.748 in).
        • The minimum thickness of the front brake rotors with the 2.4L LAX Engine is 25.0 mm (0.984 in).
        • The minimum thickness of the rear brake rotors with the 1.8L LAY Engine is 7.5 mm (0.295 in).
        • The minimum thickness of the rear brake rotors with the 2.4L LAX Engine is 8.5 mm (0.335 in).
  7. If the smallest measurement exceeds the minimum thickness specification, you may be able to resurface the brake rotor, depending upon the thickness variation and the surface condition. Refer to Brake Rotor Thickness Variation Measurement and to Brake Rotor Surface and Wear Inspection.
  8. If the smallest measurement is equal to or less than the minimum thickness specification, replace the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement or to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement as applicable.
  9. If you refinish or replace the rotor, measure the assembled lateral runout (LRO) of the rotor in order to verify the performance of the disc brake system. Refer to Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout Measurement.
  10. Install the brake caliper and the pads. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement or to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement as applicable.
