Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement Column Shift

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 420219  Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the wiper/washer switch bracket. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
  4. Remove the linear shift assembly and the A/T shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
  5. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  6. Object Number: 420221  Size: SH
  7. If the steering shaft position sensor is present, remove the following components:
  8. 6.1. The boot seal (5)
    6.2. The steering shaft seal (4)
    6.3. The sensor retainer (3)
    6.4. The sensor locator (2)
    6.5. The steering wheel position sensor. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering  (1)

  9. If you do not have a steering shaft position sensor, remove the following components:
  10. 7.1. The boot seal (4)
    7.2. The steering shaft seal (3)
    7.3. The retainer (2)
    7.4. The seal (1)

  11. Remove the 3 flat head screws.
  12. Remove the cable support bracket.

  13. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  14. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  15. Object Number: 516127  Size: SH
  16. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  17. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  18. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 299888  Size: SH
  1. Apply GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the marks on the lower shaft assembly.
  3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  4. Object Number: 420256  Size: SH
  5. Install the cable support bracket.
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Apply LOCTITE® 242, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) to the 3 flat head screws.
  8. Install the 3 flat head screws.

    Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. If no steering shaft position sensor is present, install the following components:
  10. 6.1. The seal (1)
    6.2. The retainer (2)
    6.3. The steering shaft seal (3)
    6.4. The boot seal (4)

  11. If a steering shaft position sensor is present, install the following components:
  12. 7.1. The steering wheel position sensor. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering  (1)
    7.2. The sensor locator (2)
    7.3. The sensor retainer (3)
    7.4. The steering shaft seal (4)
    7.5. The boot seal (5)

  13. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  14. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  15. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  16. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

  17. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).
  18. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly. Stake the pins in 3 places.

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  19. Install the linear shift assembly and the A/T shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
  20. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
  21. Install the wiper/washer switch bracket. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing Replacement .
  22. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement Floor Shift

Tools Required

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 420219  Size: SH
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Remove the wiper/washer switch bracket. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
  4. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  5. Object Number: 420221  Size: SH
  6. If the steering shaft position sensor is present, remove the following components:
  7. 5.1. The boot seal (5)
    5.2. The steering shaft seal (4)
    5.3. The sensor retainer (3)
    5.4. The sensor locator (2)
    5.5. The steering wheel position sensor. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering  (1)

  3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  4. Object Number: 420256  Size: SH
  5. Install the cable support bracket.
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Apply LOCTITE® 242, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) to the 3 flat head screws.
  8. Install the 3 flat head screws.

    Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  13. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  14. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  15. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  16. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.
