Tools Required

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
3. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.



4. Slide the wiper/washer switch bracket off of the steering column shaft assembly.




Important: Do not remove the wire harness straps unless necessary.

5. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
6. Remove and dispose of the bearing retainer using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
7. Remove J 23653-SIR and J 42137 from the steering shaft assembly.



8. Remove the cam orientation plate (1).
9. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
10. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
11. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
12. Remove the inner race (5).
13. Remove the lower bearing steering shaft assembly. Refer to Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement .
14. Remove the tilt head assembly from the steering shaft assembly.

1. Install the tilt head assembly to the steering shaft assembly.
2. Install the lower bearing and steering shaft assembly. Refer to Lower Bearing and Steering Column Jacket Replacement .



3. Install the inner race (5).
4. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
5. Install the upper bearing spring (3).
6. Lubricate the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529).

Important: The electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly must rest on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

7. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
8. Install the cam orientation plate (1).



9. Install the new bearing retainer using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .
10. Remove J 23653-SIR and J 42137 from the steering shaft assembly.
11. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.




Important: Press the switch mounting bracket firmly against the steering column tilt head in order to align the screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.

12. Slide the turn signal switch housing onto the steering column shaft assembly.

Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

13. Install the windshield wiper and washer switch. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
14. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
15. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
