DEFINITION: This table is used to diagnose audio distortion on one or more speakers on a Base or BOSE® audio system.

Did you perform the Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Insert the tape or CD from the J 39916-A .

Can audio distortion be heard from any speaker?

Go to Step 3

Is the vehicle equipped with an audio amplifier?

Go to Step 4

  1. Disconnect the radio interface module (RIM) connector C2.
  2. Disconnect the audio amplifier connector.
  3. Test the appropriate speaker circuits between the RIM and the audio amplifier for an open, short to ground or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the appropriate speaker output circuits from the radio for an open, short to ground or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate speaker(s). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the speaker. Refer to Radio Rear Speaker Replacement , Radio Front Side Door Lower Speaker Replacement , Front Upper Speaker Replacement or Radio Rear Side Door Speaker Replacement for service procedure.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition.

Can a pop noise be heard from the speakers?

  1. Turn OFF the radio.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition.
  3. Measure the voltage from the amp enable circuit of the radio interface module (RIM) to a good ground.

Is any voltage measured on the amp enable circuit?

Test the amp enable circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
