Removal Procedure

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.0L (L81).
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.0L (L81).
  5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley.
  7. Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.0L (L81).

  8. Object Number: 158998 Size: SH
  9. Remove the water pump bolts.
  10. Remove the water pump.
  11. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 158998 Size: SH
  3. Install the water pump.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the water pump bolts.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Inspect timing belt for serviceability. Refer to Timing Belt Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.0L (L81).
  8. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.0L (L81).
  9. Install the water pump pulley.
  10. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  12. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.0L (L81).
  13. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.0L (L81).
  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
