    • J 42098 Crank Hub Torx Socket
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  5. Remove the RH valve cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  6. Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  7. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  8. As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to the 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.
  9. Insert the J 42069-1 Camshaft Gear Locking Tool into the camshaft gears to hold them in place while loosening the camshaft gear bolt.
  10. Remove the J 42069-1 Camshaft Gear Locking Tool.
  11. Remove the camshaft gear bolt.
  12. Remove the camshaft gear.
  13. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts sequentially starting from the center and moving outwards in a spiral direction.
  14. Important: Ensure the camshaft is not under load from the lifter(s).

  15. Remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts.

  16. Object Number: 159111 Size: SH
  17. Remove the camshaft bearing caps. Note the code marks on the bearing caps (L1, L2, L3, etc.).
  18. The bearing caps for the passenger side cylinder head is marked with an L, followed by a number.
  19. Remove the camshaft with seal attached.
  20. Remove the camshaft seal.
  21. Clean all the bearing surfaces.
  22. Clean all the sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure

Tool Required

J 35268-A Camshaft Seal Installer

  1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing surfaces with GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 217457 Size: SH
  3. Install the camshaft to the cylinder head.
  4. Important: Ensure the pin on the exhaust camshaft is approximately in the 1 o'clock position and/or that the pin on the intake camshaft is approximately in the 11 o'clock position to allow for minimal load on the camshaft when installing the bearing caps.

    Camshaft Identification

    • The intake is marked with a blue paint mark (near reference point 1) and/or has a code G or B cast into it near the number one bearing surface.
    • The exhaust is marked with a green paint mark (near reference point 1) and/or has a code A cast into it near the number one bearing surface.

    Object Number: 159111 Size: SH
  5. The bearing caps for the passenger side cylinder head is marked with an L, followed by a number.

  6. Object Number: 159114 Size: SH
  7. Apply a small amount of Loctite® 573 or equivalent on the forward edge of the front bearing caps to ensure an adequate seal between the bearing cap and the cylinder head.
  8. Install the camshaft bearing caps in their appropriate position.
  9. Install the camshaft bearing cap bolts.
  10. Important: DO NOT allow the sealer to get into the oil journal of the cap.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts starting from the center cap gradually to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  11. Coat the lip of the seal with a small amount of GM P/N 1052497, chassis grease or equivalent, to aid in installation.
  12. Use the J 35268-A to tap the camshaft seal into place.
  13. Ensure the camshaft seal is fully and evenly seated.

  14. Object Number: 159009 Size: SH
  15. Install the camshaft gear.
  16. Install the camshaft gear bolt.
  17. Important: Use a new camshaft gear bolt. The required tightening method will stretch the bolt, therefore the bolt is not reusable.

    Tighten

        • Use the relevant J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 Camshaft Gear Locking Tool to hold the camshaft gear and the camshaft in place while tightening the camshaft gear bolt.
        • Use the J 36660-A to tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft) + 60 degrees + 15 degrees.
  18. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  19. Adjust the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Timing Adjustment .
  20. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  21. Install the RH valve cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  22. Install the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  23. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  24. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  25. Reprogram the applicable accessories.
  26. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
