Camshaft Cover Replacement Passenger Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 159105  Size: SH
  6. Remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs with the attached tool (1).
  7. Remove the spark plug wires from the routing retainers.
  8. Remove the knock sensor wire harness bracket nut.
  9. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  10. Remove the camshaft cover.

  12. Remove the camshaft cover seals.
  13. Important: Ensure all eight sealing O-rings are accounted for. The O-rings may stick to the camshaft bearing caps or they may fall into the oil return journals in the cylinder head.

  14. Clean the camshaft cover.
  15. Clean the sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lightly coat new seals, including the O-rings, with engine oil prior to installation to assist in holding the O-ring seals to the camshaft cover.
  2. Install the camshaft cover seals.

  3. Object Number: 159108  Size: SH
  4. Apply a thin coat of silicone sealer GM P/N 12345997 at the front and at the back of the seals.
  5. Install the camshaft cover to the cylinder head.
  6. Install the camshaft cover bolts.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the camshaft cover bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  8. Install the spark plug wires into the routing retainers.
  9. Install the spark plug boots to the spark plugs.
  10. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  11. Install the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  12. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  13. Reprogram the applicable accessories.

Camshaft Cover Replacement Drivers Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  5. Remove the oil filler spout by unlocking the tab and twisting counterclockwise.
  6. Disconnect the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) electrical connection and plastic ties.

  8. Remove the wiring harness channel bolts (1) and reposition the wiring harness channel.

  9. Object Number: 159105  Size: SH
  10. Remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs with the attached tools (1).
  11. Remove the spark plug wires from the routing retainers.
  12. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  13. Remove the camshaft cover.

  14. Object Number: 159106  Size: SH
  15. Remove the camshaft cover seals.
  16. Important: Ensure all eight sealing O-rings are accounted for. The O-rings may stick to the camshaft bearing caps or they may fall into the oil return journals in the cylinder head.

  17. Clean the camshaft cover.
  18. Clean the sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 159106  Size: SH

  8. Install the spark plug wires into the routing retainers.
  9. Install the spark plug boots to the spark plugs and reinstall the tool to the boots (1).

  10. Object Number: 158559  Size: SH
  11. Position the wiring harness channel and install the bolts (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the wiring harness channel bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).


    Object Number: 217344  Size: SH
  13. Connect the CMP electrical connection and secure the wire with a plastic tie.
  14. Install the oil filler spout (1) by twisting clockwise and snapping in place.
  15. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  16. Install the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  17. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  18. Reprogram the applicable accessories.
