Camshaft Cover Replacement Passenger Side
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Remove the intake plenum. Refer to
Intake Plenum Replacement
.
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the spark plug
boots from the spark plugs with the attached tool (1).
- Remove the spark plug wires from the routing retainers.
- Remove the knock sensor wire harness bracket nut.
- Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
- Remove the camshaft cover.
- Remove the camshaft cover
seals.
Important: Ensure all eight sealing O-rings are accounted for. The O-rings may
stick to the camshaft bearing caps or they may fall into the oil return journals
in the cylinder head.
- Clean the camshaft cover.
- Clean the sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
- Lightly coat new seals, including the O-rings, with engine oil
prior to installation to assist in holding the O-ring seals to the camshaft
cover.
- Install the camshaft cover seals.
- Apply a thin coat of silicone
sealer GM P/N 12345997 at the front and at the back of the seals.
- Install the camshaft cover to the cylinder head.
- Install the camshaft cover bolts.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Tighten
Tighten the camshaft cover bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).
- Install the spark plug wires into the routing retainers.
- Install the spark plug boots to the spark plugs.
- Install the intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Install the intake plenum. Refer to
