Speakers Inoperative - One or More Base System

DEFINITION: This table is used for diagnosing one or more speakers inoperative on the base audio system.

Was the Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check performed?

Go to Step 2

Go to Diagnostic System Check - Radio/Audio System .

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  3. Select the output control test on the scan tool.
  4. Command a known good speaker to sound with the test tone. When this test is selected, the speaker will sound with a certain audible tone.
  5. Now, command the inoperative speaker to sound with the same test tone.

Does the inoperative speaker sound the same audible tone as the known good speaker?

Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.

  1. Disconnect the radio connector.
  2. Disconnect the inoperative speaker connector.
  3. Use the DMM to measure the resistance of the circuits between the radio connector and the speaker connector.

Is the measured resistance for all measurements within the specified value?

Less than 5 ohms

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 5

  1. Locate an open or a high resistance in the associated circuits.
  2. Repair the open in the associated circuits.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the inoperative speaker. Refer to Speaker Replacement in Entertainment.

Is the replacement complete?

  1. Connect all connectors and components that were disconnected.
  2. Verify that all speakers operate properly.

Do all speakers operate properly?

  1. Disconnect the inoperative speaker's connector.
  2. Disconnect a connector from a known good speaker.
  3. Install the connector from the known good speaker to the inoperative speaker.

Does the inoperative speaker now operate?

Is the replacement complete?

  1. Use the Delco Electronics Diagnostic Kit (Part # J 39916-A) to test for input into the sound processor interface from the radio.
  2. Locate the circuit inputs into the sound processor interface from the radio for the inoperative speaker.
  3. Use the DMM on the AC range to measure the input into the sound processor interface.

Is there an input into the sound processor interface?

  1. Use the DMM to locate an open, high resistance or short to ground in the associated circuits between the radio and the sound processor interface.
  2. Repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in the associated circuits between the radio and the sound processor interface.
  3. Replace the radio if these circuits are OK. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.

Is the repair or replacement complete?

  1. Use the Delco Electronics Diagnostic Kit (Part # J 39916-A) to test for input into the radio speaker amplifier from the sound processor interface.
  2. Locate the circuit inputs into the radio speaker amplifier from the sound processor interface for the inoperative speaker.
  3. Use the DMM on the AC range to measure the input into the radio speaker amplifier.

Is there an input into the radio speaker amplifier?

  1. Use the DMM to locate an open, high resistance or short to ground in the associated circuits between the sound processor interface and the radio speaker amplifier.
  2. Repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in the associated circuits between the sound processor interface and the radio speaker amplifier.
  3. Replace the radio if these circuits are OK. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.

Is the repair or replacement complete?

Use the DMM on the AC range to measure the output from the radio speaker amplifier into the inoperative speaker.

Is there an output from the radio speaker amplifier?

  1. Use the DMM to locate an open, high resistance or short to ground in the associated circuits between the radio speaker amplifier and the inoperative speaker.
  2. Repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in the associated circuits between the radio speaker amplifier and the inoperative speaker.
  3. Replace the radio speaker amplifier if these circuits are OK. Refer to Radio Speaker Amplifier Replacement in Entertainment.

Is the repair or replacement complete?

  1. Connect all connectors and components that were disconnected.
  2. Make sure that all connections are clean and tight.
  3. Verify that all speakers operate properly.

Do all of the speakers operate properly?
