Diagnostic Instructions
DTC Descriptors
DTC P0016: Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Intake Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation
Circuit/System Description
This diagnostic monitors the relationship between the CKP sensor and CMP sensor. The powertrain control module (PCM) is continuously comparing the CKP sensor signal to the CMP sensor signal. The PCM can detect incorrect camshaft to crankshaft timing. If
the PCM suspects incorrect camshaft to crankshaft timing the CMP actuator system operation will cease and DTC P0016 sets.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | DTCs P0011, P0012, P0115, P0116, P0117, P0118 are not set. |
• | The engine is running between 550-1,000 RPM. |
• | The CMP actuator system is active. |
• | DTC P0016 runs once per drive cycle when the above conditions have been met. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The PCM detects an error in the CMP actuator learned angle for greater than 18 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• | DTC P0016 is a Type B DTC. |
• | The CMP actuator is commanded to the home or parked position. |
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
DTC P0016 is a Type B DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
A camshaft actuator stuck in the full actuation position may cause the engine to crank but not start.

Circuit/System Verification
- Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Verify that DTC P0010, P0011, P0012, P0335, P0339, P0340, or P0341 are not set.
- Idle the engine at normal operating temperature for 10 minutes. DTC P0016 should not set.
Circuit/System Testing
- Inspect the engine or review the service history of the vehicle for any recent repairs involving the timing chain, camshaft, or crankshaft.
- Test for the following conditions:
• | The correct installation of the camshaft sensors |
• | The correct installation of the crankshaft sensor |
• | A timing chain tensioner condition |
• | An incorrectly installed timing chain |
• | Excessive play in the timing chain |
• | A timing chain that jumped teeth |
• | A crankshaft or camshaft reluctor wheel that has moved in relationship to top dead center (TDC) on the crankshaft |
⇒ | If you find any of the above conditions, repair as necessary. |
Repair Instructions
