  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Tune the radio to a known strong AM station, then tune to a known strong FM station.

Inspect the antenna and the radio antenna module for improper connections. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is reception poor only on AM?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector to the radio antenna module.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Turn ON the radio.
  5. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  3. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  4. Measure the resistance between the negative battery cable and the radio antenna module case ground.

Does the resistance measure greater than the specified value?

0.050 ohms

Measure resistance of the antenna cable center conductor between the radio and the radio antenna module.

Does the resistance measure greater than the specified value?

0.050 ohms

  1. Install the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  2. Connect the harness connector to the radio antenna module.
  3. Disconnect the antenna from the radio antenna module.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Tune the radio to a known strong AM station.

Does the AM reception degrade further?

Test the battery positive voltage circuit for an open, short to ground or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
