Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check?

Verify the fault is present.

Does the system operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn the ignition to the Accessories position.
  2. Switch the audio system on and set the volume at medium level.
  3. Play a CD.

Does the audio system turn on and seem normal apart from no sound or distorted sound?

Go to Step 4

Go to Radio Display Inoperative, No Sound from Speakers

  1. Set EQ to OFF, and Bass, Treble, Fader and Balance to STD.
  2. Use the Fader and Balance settings to check that each speaker is operating, including the instrument panel tweeters and rear parcel shelf subwoofers (if fitted).

Is no sound or distortion from one speaker only?

Go to Step 5

  1. Set Fader and Balance to STD.
  2. Remove the audio system head unit. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  3. Using a digital ohmmeter, check the resistance of the defective speaker circuit at the radio connector.

Is the value as specified?

2 ohms

  1. Remove the defective speaker. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  2. Inspect the speaker for damage or foreign material.

Do the speaker terminals appear damaged?

Go to Step 15

Has the speaker or speaker terminals been making contact with body metal components?

Go to Step 16

Using a digital ohmmeter, check the resistance across the speaker terminals.

Is the value as specified?

2 ohms

Using a digital ohmmeter, check for continuity between each of the speaker circuits at the radio connector and a known good ground. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Is any circuit shorted to ground?

Go to Step 18

Using a digital voltmeter, check for voltage between each of the speaker circuits at the radio connector and a known good ground. Refer to Measuring Voltage .

Is voltage indicated at any circuit?

0 V

Go to Step 18

Using a digital ohmmeter, measure the resistance of the radio ground circuit between the radio connector and body ground.

Is the value as specified?

Less than 1 ohms

  1. Install the audio system head unit and any speakers. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  2. Turn the ignition to the Accessories position.
  3. Switch the audio system on and play a CD.
  4. Increase the volume to a loud level.
  5. Allow the audio system to play for 5 minutes.

Has the condition appeared?

Go to Step 13

System OK

  1. Allow the audio system to cool.
  2. Using the Fader and balance settings, repeat Step 12 for the front and rear/left and right speakers.

Has the test found one speaker to be the cause?

Go to Step 14

Replace the defective speaker. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

Remove the foreign material. Replace the speaker if damaged. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
