Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift

Tools Required

J 23072 Shift Tube Remover

  1. Remove the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  2. Remove the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  3. Remove the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Remove the electrical BTSI actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  5. Object Number: 407902  Size: SH
  6. Remove the retainer washer assembly (1).

  7. Object Number: 343874  Size: SH
  8. Remove the lower spring retainer (1) and dipose of it.
  9. Remove the lower bearing spring (2).
  10. Remove the lower bearing seat (3).

  11. Object Number: 407912  Size: SH
  12. Remove the bearing retainer.

  13. Object Number: 343877  Size: SH
  14. Remove the 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
  15. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  16. Object Number: 343889  Size: SH
  17. Remove the steering shaft assembly.
  18. Check the steering shaft for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle .

  19. Object Number: 343892  Size: SH
  20. Remove the 2 oval head cross recess screws (6).
  21. Remove the shift lever gate (1).
  22. Remove the 4 torx head screws (2).
  23. Remove the steering column housing support assembly (4) with the dimmer switch rod assembly (3) still connected.

  25. The shift tube assembly must be in proper position in the end of the jacket assembly.
  26. Remove the shift tube assembly (1) using J 23072 .

  27. Object Number: 413030  Size: SH
  28. Remove the shift tube retaining ring (1).
  29. Remove the thrust washer (2).
  30. Remove the lock plate (3).
  31. Remove the wave washer (4).
  32. Remove the shift lever spring (5).
  33. Remove the gear shift bowl assembly (6).
  34. Remove the gear shift bowl shroud (7).

  35. Object Number: 295954  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  36. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degress to the lower shaft assembly to disengage.

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Floor Shift

  1. Remove the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Remove the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  4. Remove the retainer washer assembly (1).

  5. Object Number: 343874  Size: SH
  6. Remove the lower spring retainer (1).
  7. Remove the lower bearing spring (2).
  8. Remove the lower bearing seat (3).

  9. Object Number: 407912  Size: SH
  10. Remove the bearing retainer.

  11. Object Number: 343877  Size: SH
  12. Remove the 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
  13. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  14. Object Number: 343889  Size: SH
  15. Remove the steering shaft assembly.
  16. Check the steering shaft for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle .

  17. Object Number: 413033  Size: SH
  18. Remove the 4 torx head screws (1).
  19. Remove the steering column housing support assembly (3) with the dimmer switch rod (3) still connected.

  20. Object Number: 413032  Size: SH
  21. Remove the lock plate (1).
  22. Remove the steering column housing shroud (2).

  23. Object Number: 295954  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the upper shaft assembly and the steering shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  24. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degress to the lower shaft assembly to disengage.
