Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

  1. Partially drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.

  5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley.
  7. Position aside the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.

  8. Object Number: 46177  Size: SH
  9. Remove the water pump bolts.

  10. Object Number: 46178  Size: SH
  11. Remove the water pump.
  12. Remove the water pump gasket.
  13. Clean and inspect the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

NOTICE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

  1. Install the water pump gasket.
  2. Install the water pump.

  3. Object Number: 46177  Size: SH
  4. Use theJ 36660-A in order to install the water pump bolts.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the water pump bolts (long) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) plus 40 degrees
        • Tighten the water pump bolts (short) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft) plus 80 degrees.

  6. Install the water pump pulley.
  7. Loosely install the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  9. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
  10. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 13 N·m(115 lb in)

  12. Fill the engine cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  13. Inspect for leaks.
