Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the hood.
  3. Refer to Hood Replacement in Sheet Metal.

  4. If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever.
  5. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  6. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  7. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement .


    Object Number: 42989  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipe.
  9. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement .

  10. Remove the brace rods from the engine and the transmission, manual transmission only.
  11. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  12. Remove the starter motor.
  13. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

  14. Remove the transmission.
  15. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  16. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  17. Refer to Oxygen Sensor Replacement .

  18. Remove the generator rear brace using the following procedure:
  19. 10.1. Remove the bolt from the rear of the generator.
    10.2. Remove two nuts holding the brace to the engine.
    10.3. Remove the brace from the engine.

  20. Disconnect the ground straps from the engine block.
  21. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement .

  22. Remove the drive belt.
  23. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .


    Object Number: 199003  Size: SH

    Important: Do not evacuate the A/C system.

  24. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped.
  25. Refer to Compressor Replacement in HVAC.

  26. Remove the air intake duct.
  27. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement .

  28. Remove the radiator.
  29. Refer to Radiator Replacement .

  30. Remove the power steering pump and set it aside.
  31. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.

  32. Disconnect both heater hoses from the heater core.
  33. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in HVAC.

  34. Disconnect the vacuum hoses.
  35. Disconnect the accelerator cable and the cruise control cable, if equipped.
  36. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement .

  37. Remove the EGR pipe from the engine.

  38. Object Number: 204051  Size: SH
  39. Remove the EGR valve from the EGR adapter.
  40. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .

  41. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery.
  42. Disconnect the 12 volt supply from the mega fuse.
  43. Leave the cable on the engine.

  44. Remove the bolt for the rear wiring harness bracket from the intake manifold.
  45. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the top of the engine:
  46. • Fuel injector harness
    • Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
    • Idle air control (IAC) motor
    • Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Throttle position (TP) sensor
  47. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the left side of the engine:
  48. • Oxygen (O²) sensor
    • Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
    • Ignition control module (ICM)
    • Purge canister solenoid
    • Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
    • Knock (KS) sensor
  49. Disconnect the engine block heater, if equipped.

  51. Disconnect the electrical connector from the generator.
  52. Disconnect the generator output wire from the generator.

  54. Disconnect the fuel pipes.
  55. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Assembly Replacement .

  56. Install an approved engine lifting device to the engine lift brackets.

  57. Object Number: 2491  Size: SH
  58. Remove the left side engine mount through-bolt.

  59. Object Number: 3440  Size: SH
  60. Remove the right side engine mount through-bolt.
  61. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 3440  Size: SH
  1. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  2. Install the right side engine mount through-bolt.
  3. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .


    Object Number: 2491  Size: SH
  4. Install the left side engine mount through-bolt.
  5. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .

  6. Remove the engine lifting device from the engine lift brackets.

  7. Object Number: 199002  Size: SH
  8. Connect the fuel pipes.
  9. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Assembly Replacement .


    Object Number: 1045  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Connect the generator output wire to the generator.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  12. Connect the generator electrical connector.
  13. Connect the engine block heater, if equipped.
  14. Connect the following electrical connectors to the left side of the engine:
  15. • Oxygen (O²) sensor
    • Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
    • Ignition control module (ICM)
    • Purge canister solenoid
    • Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
    • Knock (KS) sensor
  16. Connect the following electrical connectors to the top of the engine:
  17. • Fuel injector harness
    • Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
    • Idle air control (IAC) motor
    • Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Throttle position (TP) sensor
  18. Install the bolt for the rear wiring harness bracket to the intake manifold.
  19. Connect the 12 volt supply to the mega fuse.
  20. Connect the battery positive cable to the battery.

  22. Install the EGR valve.
  23. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .


    Object Number: 175505  Size: SH
  24. Install the EGR pipe to the engine.
  25. Install the two EGR pipe to the EGR adapter bolts.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb in).

  27. Install the EGR pipe to the intake manifold bolts.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  29. Connect the accelerator cable and the cruise control cable, if equipped.
  30. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement .

  31. Connect the vacuum hoses.
  32. Install both heater hoses to the heater core.
  33. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in HVAC.

  34. Install the power steering pump.
  35. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.

  44. Install the ground straps to the engine block.

  46. Install the generator brace using the following procedure.
  47. 27.1. Install the brace to the engine.
    27.2. Install the two nuts holding the brace to the engine.
    27.3. Install the bolt to the rear of the generator.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  48. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.

  50. Install the transmission.
  51. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  54. Install the brace rods to the transmission and the engine, manual transmission only.

  56. Connect the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe.

  58. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  59. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement .

  60. Install the manual transmission shift lever, if removed.
  61. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.

  62. Install the hood.
  63. Refer to Hood Replacement in Sheet Metal.

  64. Connect the battery negative cable.
