Starter Replacement 4.3 4WD

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Disconnect the engine mounts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  3. Raise the engine.
  4. Support the engine.
  5. Remove the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount in Engine Mechanical.
  6. Support the transmission assembly.

  8. Remove the starter mounting bolts.
  9. Rotate the starter for access.

  10. Remove the wires from the solenoid.

  11. Object Number: 7307  Size: SH
  12. Remove the starter from the vehicle.
  13. Note the location of the shims, if equipped.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 43052  Size: SH
  1. Install the starter to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 43021  Size: SH
  3. Connect the wires to the solenoid.

  4. Object Number: 43052  Size: SH
  5. Install the inboard starter mounting bolt. Do not tighten.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the starter shims and the outboard starter mounting bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft).

  9. Lower the engine assembly onto the mounts.
  10. • Connect the transmission mount.
    • Connect the engine mounts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Starter Replacement 4.3

Removal Procedure

Notice: Never operate the starter motor for more than 30 seconds at a time. Allow it to cool for at least two minutes. Overheating, caused by too much cranking, will damage the starter motor.

  5. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.

  7. Remove the starter from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the starter shims, if equipped.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 7306  Size: SH
  3. Install the inboard starter mounting bolt. Do not tighten.
  4. Install the starter shims to the vehicle, if equipped.

  6. Install the outboard starter mounting bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft).

  2. Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  3. Remove the brace rod from the front of the engine to the clutch housing.

  5. Remove the starter heat shield.

  7. Remove the wires from the starter solenoid.

  9. Remove the brush end bracket attaching bolt.

  10. Object Number: 7302  Size: SH
  11. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.
  12. Remove the starter from the vehicle.

  13. Object Number: 7303  Size: SH
  14. Remove the starter shims, if equipped.

  15. Object Number: 7304  Size: SH
  16. Remove the brush end bracket from the starter, if necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the brush end bracket to the starter motor.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the brush end bracket attaching nuts to the starter motor.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the brush end bracket nuts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable.   5. Install the starter motor to the vehicle.

  7. Install the inboard starter mounting bolt. Do not tighten the bolt.

  8. Object Number: 7303  Size: SH
  9. Install the starter shims, if equipped.

  10. Object Number: 7301  Size: SH
  11. Install the brush end bracket mounting bolt to the engine. Do not tighten the bolt.
  12. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener.   13. Install the outboard starter mounting bolt.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor and the brush end bracket attaching bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft).

  15. Connect the wires to the starter solenoid.
  16. Install the starter heat shield.

  18. Install the front exhaust pipe. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  19. Connect the battery negative cable.
