Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 38205  Size: SH

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  4. Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  5. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement .

  6. Remove the drive belt.
  7. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  8. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  9. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .

  10. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  11. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core.

  13. Remove the generator.
  14. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  15. Remove the engine cooling fan.
  16. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .

  17. Remove the idler pulley and the four bolts.

  19. Remove the heater hose pipe bracket to the air cleaner outlet resonator bracket bolt.
  20. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine block.
  21. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement .

  22. Remove the accessory bracket.

  24. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  25. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  26. Remove the valve rocker arms and push rods
  27. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  28. Disconnect the fuel pipes.
  29. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement in Engine Controls.

  30. Remove the cylinder head.
  31. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal .

  32. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  33. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 183438  Size: SH
  1. Install the cylinder head.
  2. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation .

  3. Connect the fuel pipes.
  4. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement in Engine Controls.

  5. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods.
  6. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  7. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  8. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  9. Install the accessory bracket.
  10. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the mounting bolts to the bracket.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft)

  13. Install the thermostat housing to the engine block.
  14. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement .

  15. Install the heater hose pipe bracket to the air cleaner outlet resonator bracket bolt.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  17. Install the idler pulley and the four bolts.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  19. Install the engine cooling fan.
  20. Refer Fan Clutch Replacement .

  21. Install the generator.
  22. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  23. Install the heater hoses on the heater core.
  24. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in HVAC.

  25. Install the upper radiator hose.
  26. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement .

  27. Install the exhaust manifold.
  28. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .


    Object Number: 177622  Size: SH
  29. Install the drive belt.
  30. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  31. Install the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  32. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement .


    Object Number: 38205  Size: SH
  33. Fill the engine coolant.
  34. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  35. Connect the battery negative cable.
