Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  2. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling
  3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement and/or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  4. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement
  5. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
  6. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  7. Remove the power steering pump with lines. Move the power steering pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement
  8. Disconnect the thermostat bypass pipe from the engine front cover.
  9. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the coolant pump. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement
  10. Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Water Pump Replacement

  12. Remove the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket from the engine front cover. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor wiring harness electrical connector.

  13. Object Number: 95865  Size: SH
  14. Remove the engine front cover bolts (1, 2 and 3).
  15. Remove the engine front cover.

  16. Object Number: 61818  Size: SH
  17. Remove the engine front cover gasket.
  18. Clean the engine front cover and engine block gasket sealing surfaces. Refer to Engine Front Cover Clean and Inspect
  19. Inspect the engine front cover for damage to the engine front cover, crankshaft front oil seal or the gasket sealing surface. Refer to Engine Front Cover Clean and Inspect

  21. If replacing the engine front cover, remove the drive belt shield.

  23. If replacing the engine front cover, remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement
  24. If replacing the engine front cover, remove the coolant pump from the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement

Installation Procedure

  1. If removed, install the coolant pump to the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement

  2. Object Number: 190537  Size: SH
  3. If removed, install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement

  4. Object Number: 190591  Size: SH
  5. If removed, install the drive belt shield.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the drive belt shield bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the drive belt shield bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Coat both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket with sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent.

  10. Object Number: 61818  Size: SH
  11. Install the engine front cover gasket.

  12. Object Number: 95865  Size: SH
  13. Install the engine front cover.
  14. Install the engine front cover bolts.
  15. Tighten

        • Tighten the five small engine front cover bolts (1) to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).
        • Tighten the three large engine front cover bolts (2) to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).
        • Tighten the two large engine front cover bolts (3) to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  16. Install the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket to the engine front cover. Connect the crankshaft position sensor wiring harness electrical connector.
  17. Install the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Water Pump Replacement
  18. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement
  19. Connect the thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover.
  20. Install the power steering pump with lines. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement
  21. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  22. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
  23. Fill the engine with new engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement and/or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  24. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling
  25. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
