Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 37096 Flywheel Holder
    •  J 38197-A Crankshaft Balancer Remover
    •  J 36660-A Electronic Torque Angle Meter

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  6. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.

  7. Object Number: 309963  Size: SH
  8. Install the J 37096 .

  9. Object Number: 97727  Size: SH
  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.

  11. Object Number: 97728  Size: SH

    Notice: Service the balancer as a unit. Do not separate the pulley from the balancer hub.

  12. Install the J 38197-A .
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  14. Remove the J 38197-A

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the engine front cover seal contact area on the crankshaft balancer, and the seal surface with engine oil.

  2. Object Number: 97730  Size: SH
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt. Use the J 37096 in order to keep the flywheel from turning.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 150 N·m (111 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolt an additional 76 degrees.

  7. Remove the J 37096
  8. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  9. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  10. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  13. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
