Did you perform the Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn ON the radio.
  2. Adjust the radio balance and fade to the suspect speaker.

Does the speaker operate properly?

Go to Audio System Troubleshooting Hints

Go to Step 3

Are all of the speakers inoperative?

Go to Step 8

Is the vehicle equipped with a audio power booster?

Go to Step 5

Is the right or left side speakers inoperative?

Go to Step 10

  1. Disconnect the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement for service procedure.
  2. Momentarily touch a 1.5 volt battery between the appropriate speaker circuits.

Does the speaker emit an audible pop?

Go to Step 12

  1. Disconnect the audio power booster speaker connector. Refer to Radio Speaker Amplifier Replacement .
  2. Using two fused jumpers, connect the suspect speaker inputs from the radio to the suspect speaker outputs from the audio power booster in order to bypass the audio power booster.
  3. Momentarily touch a 1.5 volt battery between the appropriate speaker circuits at the radio connector.

Does the speaker emit an audible pop?

Go to Step 11

Test the speaker output circuits of the radio for a short to ground or battery positive. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Go to Step 18

Test the circuits of the appropriate speaker for an open, short or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the appropriate (right or left) speaker outputs from the audio power booster for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Reconnect the radio.
  2. Turn ON the radio.

Can audio be heard from the suspect speaker?

Inspect for poor connections at the speaker. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
