Linear Shift Assembly Replacement On Vehicle

Tools Required

J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  2. Place the shift lever in the neutral position.
  3. Remove the Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Actuator Replacement in Shift Lock Control.

  4. Object Number: 324874  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the park lock cable assembly (1).
  6. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot on the lock module assembly and push against the locking tab to remove.

  7. Object Number: 324916  Size: SH
  8. Remove 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws from the linear shift assembly.
  9. Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column.
  10. To disassemble the linear shift assembly, proceed to the next step.

  12. Remove the hexagon flange head bolt from the gear shift lever assembly.
  13. Remove the ball and actuator assembly (2) from the gear shift lever assembly.
  14. Remove the shift lever clevis (1) from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.

  16. Remove the 3 oval head 6 lobed socket tapping screws from the shift gate.
  17. Remove the park lock cable assembly from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.

  18. Remove the hexagon flange head bolt from the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  19. Remove the cable shift cam assembly (1) from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  20. Remove the cam bushing (2) from the cable shift cam assembly (1).

  22. Remove the 3 flat head tapping screws from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  23. Remove the gear shift lever assembly support bracket from the steering column support assembly.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 324916  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the linear shift assembly and secure using 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  3. To install the park lock cable assembly, refer to steps 9 and 10.
  4. To install the linear shift assembly piece by piece, proceed to the next step.

    Important: Lubricate all of the moving parts of the linear shift assembly with synthetic grease.

  6. Install the gear shift lever assembly support bracket onto the steering column support assembly.
  7. Screw the 3 flat head tapping screws into the gear shift lever assembly.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the 3 flat head tapping screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  10. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  11. Screw the hexagon flange head bolt into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 N·m (14 lb ft).

  13. Install the park lock cable assembly onto the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  14. Screw the 3 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws into the shift gate and park lock cable assembly.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the 3 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws to 6.5 N·m (58 lb in).

  16. Install the shift lever clevis (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  17. Install the ball actuator assembly (2) onto the gear shift lever assembly.
  18. Install the hexagon flange head bolt into the gear shift lever assembly.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 N·m (14 lb ft).

  20. To install the linear shift assembly as an assembly, proceed to the next step.
  21. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement .

  23. Connect the park lock cable assembly (1) to the lock module assembly in the following way:
  24. • Place the steering column lock cylinder set into the off position.
    • Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
    • Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.

  25. Adjust the park lock cable assembly in the following way:
  26. 17.1. Use the shift lever clevis to put the column in the PARK position.
    17.2. Put the ignition switch in the accessory position.
    17.3. Unlock the adjuster ring (1) on the park lock cable assembly withJ 41396 .
    17.4. Pull on the cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the cable.
    17.5. Lock the adjuster ring (1) securely in place on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396 .
  27. Inspect the park lock cable assembly using the following steps:
  28. 18.1. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF--LOCK position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the PARK position.
    18.2. Turn the key to the RUN position and put the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position.
    18.3. With the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the OFF--LOCK position.
    18.4. Put the shift lever clevis into the PARK position.
    18.5. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF--LOCK position and then remove the key.
    18.6. Install the automatic transmission shift interlock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Actuator Replacement in Shift Lock Control.
    18.7. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .

Linear Shift Assembly Replacement Off Vehicle

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the upper and lower trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  2. Remove the automatic transmission shift lock control. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Actuator Replacement in Shift Lock Control.

  4. Remove the hexagon flanged head bolt.
  5. Remove the ball and actuator assembly (2).
  6. Remove the shift lever clevis (1).

  8. Remove the park lock cable (1) from the lock module assembly.

  9. Object Number: 324897  Size: SH
  10. Remove the 2 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws from the shift gate.
  11. Remove the park lock cable assembly.

  12. Object Number: 324900  Size: SH
  13. Remove the hexagon flange head bolt.
  14. Remove the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  15. Remove the cam bushing (2) from the cable shift cam assembly (1).

  16. Object Number: 324902  Size: SH
  17. Remove 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws.
  18. Remove the gearshift lever assembly support bracket.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gearshift lever assembly support bracket and secure by using the 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tap screws.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  3. Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  4. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  5. Install the hexagon flange head bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 18 N·m (14 lb ft).

  7. Install the park lock cable assembly and secure by using 2 oval head 6-lobed socket tap screws.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 6.5 N·m (58 lb in).

  9. Install the shift lever clevis (1).
  10. Install the ball actuator assembly (2).
  11. Install the hexagon flanged head bolt.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 18 N·m (14 lb ft).

  13. Put the column in the NEUTRAL position.
  14. Install the automatic transmission shift lock control only. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Actuator Replacement in Shift Lock Control.

  16. Install the park lock cable (1) into the lock module assembly.
  17. Place steering column lock cylinder set into the OFF position.
  18. Place the shift lever clevis into the PARK position.
  19. Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.
  20. Inspect the park lock cable assembly by performing the following steps.
  21. 15.1. Insert the key into the ignition switch.
    15.2. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or the LOCK position. The gear shift lever must remain locked in the PARK position.
    15.3. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the RUN position.
    15.4. Place the gear shift lever in the NEUTRAL position.
    15.5. With the gear shift lever in the NEUTRAL position, the steering column lock cylinder set must remain out of the OFF or the LOCK position.
    15.6. Place the gear shift lever in the PARK position.
    15.7. Put the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or the LOCK position.
    15.8. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  22. Install the upper and lower trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
