Removal Procedure

Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Disable the SIR. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the center console. Refer to Console Replacement .
  4. Remove the fuel/rear compartment release switch. Refer to Fuel/Rear Compartment Release Switch Replacement .
  5. Remove the headlamp switch. Refer to Headlamp Switch Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  6. Remove the knee bolster . Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  7. Remove the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment, or Navigation Display Module Replacement in Navigation.
  8. Remove the IP cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  9. Remove the IP storage compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  10. Remove the left IP accessory trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Left Side .
  11. Remove the right IP accessory trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Right Side .
  12. Remove the IP outer trim covers. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .

  14. Remove the IP fasteners (1) from each end of the IP retainer.

  15. Object Number: 530762  Size: SH
  16. Remove the IP retainer fastener (1), located in the fuel door/ rear compartment opening.

  17. Object Number: 751047  Size: SH
  18. Remove the HVAC duct/ IP retainer fastener (1), located below the HVAC duct , on the drivers side.

  19. Object Number: 752491  Size: SH
  20. Remove the fasteners (1) from both sides of the IP extension bracket (2).

  22. Turn the ignition to the run position.
  23. Depress the release button (1) on the park lock cable and pull the cable, in order to disconnect the park lock cable from the ignition switch.
  24. The release button (1) is located on the bottom of the ignition switch at the 6 o'clock position.

  25. Remove the upper and lower steering column fasteners.
  26. Lower the steering column in order to allow clearance for the IP retainer to be removed.

  28. Remove the remaining IP retainer fasteners.
  29. Partially remove the IP retainer (1) from the IP carrier (2).
  30. Disconnect the inside air temperature sensor electrical connector.

  31. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  32. Feed the wiring through the IP retainer openings as necessary.
  33. Remove the IP retainer from the vehicle.
  34. Remove the Inside air temperature sensor from the IP retainer. Refer to Inside Air Temperature Sensor Replacement in HVAC Systems-Automatic.
  35. Remove the Ignition switch from the IP retainer. Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 751440  Size: SH
  1. Install the Ignition switch to the IP retainer. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
  2. Install the Inside air temperature sensor to the IP retainer. Refer to Inside Air Temperature Sensor Replacement HVAC Systems-Automatic.
  3. Partially install the IP retainer (1) to the carrier (2).
  4. Guide the wiring through the IP retainer openings.

  5. Connect the inside air temperature sensor electrical connector.
  6. Connect the ignition switch electrical connectors.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the IP retainer (1) fasteners.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 2N·m (18 lb in).

  10. Turn the ignition to the run position.
  11. Align the park lock cable tab (1) with the ignition switch.
  12. Push the cable towards the ignition switch until an audible click is heard indicating the release button is engaged.

    Caution: In order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following:

       • Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column.
       • Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.

  14. Install the steering column lower fasteners.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering column fasteners to 27N·m (20 lb ft)

  16. Install the steering column upper fasteners.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering column fasteners to 27N·m (20 lb ft)

  18. Install the IP retainer fastener (1) located in the opening for the fuel/rear compartment switch assembly.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the fastener to 2N·m (18 lb in).

  20. Install the HVAC duct/ IP retainer fastener (1), located below the HVAC duct, on the drivers side.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the fastener to 2N·m (18 lb in).

  22. Install the IP fastener (1) at each end of the IP retainer.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 2N·m (18 lb in).

  24. Install the fuel/rear compartment release switch. Refer to Fuel/Rear Compartment Release Switch Replacement .
  25. Install the headlamp switch. Refer to Headlamp Switch Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  26. Install the knee bolster . Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  27. Install the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment, or Navigation Display Module Replacement in Navigation.
  28. Install the IP cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  29. Install the IP storage compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  30. Install the left IP accessory trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Left Side .
  31. Install the right IP accessory trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement - Right Side .
  32. Install the IP outer trim covers. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement
  33. Install the center console. Refer to Console Replacement .
  34. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  35. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
