Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

1. Remove the driver's side sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side or Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side .
2. Remove the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement .
3. Remove the data link connector (DLC) from the knee bolster. Refer to Data Link Connector Replacement .



4. Remove the 4 fasteners (2) that secure the knee bolster bracket to the lower IP.
5. Remove the knee bolster bracket (3).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

1. Align the knee bolster bracket (3) to the lower IP, then install the knee bolster fasteners (2).

Tighten
Tighten the fasteners (2) to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

2. Install the DLC to the knee bolster. Refer to Data Link Connector Replacement .
3. Install the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement .
4. Install the left sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side or Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side .
