Removal Procedure

Important: The following procedure covers disassembly and inspection of the complete fuel supply system. If the fuel system is contaminated, it can be cleaned. The extent of fuel system contamination can usually be determined during disassembly.

    Object Number: 242424 Size: SH
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the in-line fuel filter. Refer to In-Line Fuel Filter Replacement .
  4. Important: If filter is plugged or contaminated, replace it after cleaning fuel pipes.

    Object Number: 246727 Size: SH
  5. Inspect the in-line fuel filter for contamination.
  6. Drain fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Draining .
  7. Remove fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement .
  8. Locate the tank in a suitable work area away from heat, flame, or other source of ignition.

  9. Object Number: 237458 Size: SH
  10. Remove the fuel sender assembly (1) from the fuel tank (4). Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement .

  11. Object Number: 191818 Size: SH
  12. Inspect the fuel sender strainer. If the strainer is contaminated, the strainer must be replaced and the fuel tank should be cleaned.
  13. Inspect the fuel pump inlet for dirt and debris. If found, the fuel sender should be replaced.
  14. Flush fuel tank with running hot water for at least five minutes.
  15. Pour the water out of fuel sender assembly opening.
  16. Rock the tank to be sure that removal of water from tank is complete.

  17. Object Number: 596360 Size: SH

Notice: Do not attempt to straighten any kinked nylon fuel lines. Replace any kinked nylon fuel feed or return pipes in order to prevent damage to the vehicle.

  18. Disconnect the fuel feed (3) fuel return pipes (2), quick-connect fittings inside the engine compartment. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  19. Remove the (1) EVAP pipe from the EVAP canister purge valve.
  20. Notice: Use an emery cloth in order to remove rust or burrs from the fuel pipe. Use a radial motion with the fuel pipe end in order to prevent damage to the O-ring sealing surface.

  21. Apply air pressure to fuel pipes in the opposite direction from normal fuel flow.
  22. Wipe off male pipe ends. Inspect all connectors for dirt and burrs, using a clean shop towel.
  23. Clean the components/assemblies as required.
  24. Replace the components/assemblies as required.

Installation Procedure

Caution: Always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe ends before connecting the fuel pipe fittings in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated.

  12. Add fuel to the fuel tank.
  13. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
  14. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  15. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  16. Inspect for leaks.

  18. Install the fuel injector sight shield (1) to the engine.
  19. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  20. Install the fuel injector sight shield nuts (2).
  21. Tighten
Tighten the nuts 3 N·m (27 lb in).
