Tools Required

    • J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit
    • J 36660-A Torque/Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the intake air resonator Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  2. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  3. Remove the timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  4. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  5. As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to the 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.

  6. Object Number: 345381 Size: SH
  7. Install the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 between the camshaft drive sprockets. This will hold the drive sprockets in place while removing the bolt.
  8. Remove the camshaft drive sprocket bolt.
  9. Remove the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2.
  10. Remove the camshaft drive sprocket.

Installation Procedure

Important: The camshaft drive sprockets have numbered slots that must be aligned with the pins on the camshafts.

When the numbered camshaft drive sprocket slot is properly installed on the camshaft pin, the reference mark (1, 2, 3 or 4) on the drive sprocket, will align with the notch on the rear timing belt cover.

    Object Number: 159005 Size: SH
  1. Install the camshaft drive sprocket.
  2. Ensure the camshaft pin is installed in the correct numbered slot on the drive sprocket.

    Object Number: 159009 Size: SH

Important: Use a new camshaft drive sprocket bolt, the old bolt is not reusable.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the camshaft drive sprocket bolt.
  4. Tighten

        • Use the relevant J 42069-1 and/or the J 42069-2 to hold the camshaft drive sprocket and the camshaft in place while tightening the camshaft drive sprocket bolt.
        • Use the J 36660-A to tighten the camshaft drive sprocket bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft) + 60 degrees + 15 degrees.
  5. Turn the crankshaft clockwise back to TDC.
  6. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  7. Install the timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement
  8. Install the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  9. Install the intake air resonator Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
