Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  4. Remove the positive battery cable starter motor lead nut (1) from the starter.
  5. Remove the positive battery cable lead from the starter.
  6. Remove the starter solenoid terminal lead nut (2) from the starter.
  7. Remove the starter solenoid terminal lead from the starter.

  9. Remove the starter motor bolts (2, 3).
  10. Remove the starter motor (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter motor (1).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the starter motor bolts (2, 3).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  5. Install the starter solenoid terminal lead to the starter.
  6. Install the starter solenoid terminal lead nut (2) to the starter.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the starter solenoid terminal lead nut (2) to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  8. Install the positive battery cable lead to the starter.
  9. Install the positive battery cable starter motor lead nut (1) to the starter.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable starter motor lead nut (1) to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
