Removal Procedure

Tool Required

J 35268-A Camshaft/Front Main Seal Installer

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  5. Remove the relevant valve cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  6. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  7. Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  8. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  9. Remove the relevant camshaft gear(s). Refer to Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement .
  10. Remove the relevant camshaft(s) with seal attached.

  12. Remove the lifter(s) (1). Place the lifter(s) in a rack sequentially so they can be reinstalled in their original order if the lifter(s) is to be reused.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 217379  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the lifter(s) (1) with prelube, GM P/N 12345501 or equivalent.
  2. Install the lifter(s) in their original position if not replaced.
  3. Install the relevant camshaft(s).
  4. Coat the lip of the camshaft seal with a small amount of chassis grease, GM P/N 1052497 or equivalent, to aid in installation.
  5. Use the J 35268-A to tap the seal into place.
  6. Ensure the camshaft seal is fully and evenly seated.
  7. Install the relevant camshaft gear(s). Refer to Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement .
  8. Install the timing belt and adjust the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  9. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement .
  10. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement .
  11. Install the relevant valve cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  13. Install the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement .
  14. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reprogram the applicable accessories.
