Perform the following steps to adjust the parking brake operation:

  1. Set the parking brake lever to the 4th notch.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the rear wheels and tires. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove exhaust muffler heat shields. Refer to Exhaust Heat Shield Replacement in Exhaust System.
  5. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  6. Loosen the adjuster nut (1) on the parking brake lever shaft (2) until the rear parking brake levers at the rear of the backing plates are in the at-rest position (facing towards the rear of the vehicle).
  7. Important: Clean and lubricate the exposed threads on each side of the nut before attempting to turn the adjusting nut.

  8. Measure the exposed shaft from the nut.
  9. Record the measurement.

  11. Turn the adjustment nut on both rear parking brake self adjusters until both sets of parking brake shoes just contact the parking brake drum with no significant drag.
  12. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Tighten the adjuster nut (1) on the rear parking brake lever shaft (2) until braking effort occurs while ensuring the wheels can still turn.
  14. Perform the following inspection:
  15. 12.1. Ensure the rear wheels still turn with the parking brake lever set on the 4th notch.
    12.2. Ensure the rear wheels are tight with the parking brake lever set on the 7th notch.
    12.3. Additionally, ensure the braking effort is equal at both rear wheels.
  16. The adjustment procedure is complete when the above inspections are correct.
