Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift

Assembly Procedure

Tools Required

J 23073-01 Shift Tube Installer


    Object Number: 299888  Size: SH

    Important: Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees. Align the marks on the shafts from the disassemble procedure.

  1. Apply synthetic grease to the exposed centering sphere. Install the lower steering shaft assembly (2) to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  2. Object Number: 413030  Size: SH
  3. Install the gear shift bowl shroud (7).
  4. Install the gear shift bowl assembly (6).
  5. Install the shift lever spring (5).
  6. Install the wave washer (4).
  7. Install the lock plate (3).
  8. Install the thrust washer (2).
  9. Install the shift tube retaining ring (1).

  10. Object Number: 413456  Size: SH
  11. Install the shift tube assembly (1) using J 23073-01 .

  12. Object Number: 343892  Size: SH
  13. Install the shift lever gate (1) secure with 2 oval head cross recess screws (6).
  14. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1 N·m (9 lb in).

  15. Install the steering column housing support assembly (4) with the dimmer switch rod (3) still attached.
  16. Install the 4 TORX® head screws (2).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  18. Install the steering shaft assembly.

  19. Object Number: 343877  Size: SH
  20. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
  21. Install 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 5.5 N·m (49 lb in).

  23. Install the bearing retainer.

  24. Object Number: 343874  Size: SH
  25. Install the lower bearing seat (3).
  26. Install the lower bearing spring (2).
  27. Install the lower spring retainer (1).

  28. Object Number: 407902  Size: SH
  29. Install the retainer washer assembly (1).
  30. Install the electrical BTSI actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  31. Install the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  32. Install the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  33. Install the shift lever assembly. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Floor Shift

Assembly Procedure


    Object Number: 299888  Size: SH

  1. Apply synthetic grease to the exposed centering sphere. Install the lower steering shaft assembly (2) to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  3. Install the lock plate (1).
  4. Install the steering column housing shroud (2).
  5. Install the steering column housing shroud (2) to the steering column.

  6. Object Number: 413033  Size: SH
  7. Install the steering column housing support assembly (3) with the dimmer switch rod (2) still attached.
  8. Install the 4 TORX® head screws (1).
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.     Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  10. Install the steering shaft assembly.

  11. Object Number: 343877  Size: SH
  12. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
  13. Install 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 5.5 N·m (49 lb in).

  15. Install the lower bearing seat (3).
  16. Install the lower bearing spring (2).
  17. Install the lower spring retainer (1).

  18. Object Number: 407912  Size: SH
  19. Install the bearing retainer (1).

  20. Object Number: 407902  Size: SH
  21. Install the retainer washer assembly (1).
  22. Install the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  23. Install the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
