Rotational Torque Measurement AWD
Tools Required
• | J 45165 Differential Torque
Cross Bar |
- Rotate the transmission assembly so
that the torque converter housing side is facing up.
- Install the front differential assembly (13) into the empty
transmission case.
- Install the torque converter housing
assembly (10) to the transmission case assembly.
- Install 7 M8 x 1.25 x 30 mm
non coated bolts (1) and hand tighten.
- Install 2 M8 x 1.25 x 30 mm
bolts (2) and hand tighten.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Tighten the torque converter housing bolts in sequence.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 23.5-35.3 N·m (17.33-26.00 lb ft).
Important: When installing J 45053
(2),
make sure that the top edge of the differential output spline is slightly
below tip of brass inserts.
- Install the adjustable jaw portion of J 45053
(2)
onto the exposed splined area of the differential assembly and lightly tighten
the mounting bolts.
- Install J 45165
(1)
onto J 45053
(2).
- Using a 5/8" socket and torque wrench, measure the
rotational torque required to slowly rotate the front differential assembly
and note the readings. Refer to Front Differential Gear Assembly, Unloaded
Rotating Torque in
Transmission Clearance Specifications
.
Rotational Torque Specification
Specification should be within 0.70-1.20 N·m (6.195-10.621 lb in).
- Compare this measurement with the specification in
Transmission Clearance Specifications
. If the obtained measurement is within specifications,
the differential shim replacement is not necessary.
If obtained
measurement is not within the listed specifications, the front differential
bearing race shim must be replaced.
- Remove J 45165
(1)
and J 45053
(2) from the front
differential assembly.
- Remove the torque converter housing assembly and the front differential
assembly from the transmission case.
