The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

On rare occasions, DTCs P1011 and/or P1012 may be stored in the ECM. These are type C DTCs so they should not cause the check engine light to illuminate. However, they may be found in the ECM during diagnosis of another concern.

Recommendation/Instructions:

If either DTC is stored, perform the following steps to listen for an engine rattle noise during start up:

  1. Start the engine and run until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
  2. Shut the engine down and allow the oil to drain into the pan.
  3. After at least 20 minutes, restart the engine and listen for an engine rattle noise from the top end of the engine during the first few seconds of engine operation.

If a rattle noise is heard, follow the SI diagnostic procedures for the P1011 or P1012 DTCs. If no rattle noise is heard, reprogram the ECM with the latest TIS2Web calibrations. At this time, the latest engine calibration is titled "New calibration with diagnostic enhancements for DTC P0626, also improves misfire diagnostics." This calibration, or any that follow, is designed to address this concern. Vehicles built after the VIN breakpoint in the model list above, were manufactured with this updated ECM calibration.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
