The left knob changes the temperature of the air coming through the system. The right knob allows you to select the mode and the path of air flow through the various outlets in the system. You can position the knob between settings to vary the sir flow from the different outlets.
(Vent): Turn the right knob to Vent setting. Air flow is directed through the instrument panel outlets. Set the left knob to the temperature desired.Notice: Do not use anything sharp on the inside of the rear window. If you do, you could cut or damage the warming grid, and the repairs would not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Do not attach a temporary vehicle license, tape, a decal or anything similar to the defogger grid.
Your Saturn has rear window defogger. Those lines you can see across the rear window are the lines of the heater that warms the glass.
You'll find the control switch on the center of the instrument panel in the area of the heater and air conditioning controls.
To run the defogger, push the switch. Your defogger switch has an indicator light that will glow.
Your defogger will stay on for 15 minutes unless the ignition is turned to either the accessory "ACC" or "LOCK" position or the defogger switch is turned off by pressing the switch again before the 15 minute time period has passed.
To run the defogger for more than 15 minutes, wait until the defogger turns off, and then push the switch again. The defogger will be on for 7 1/2 more minutes.
Your defogger is designed to clear condensation on the inside or outside of the rear window. If there is ice on the outside of the rear window, you may need to scrape it off.
The automatic climate control system controls the heating, cooling, and ventilation in your Saturn vehicle automatically. This system also allows you to manually adjust airflow and temperature. To change the temperature display from degrees. Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius, press the AUTO, ECON and MODE buttons simultaneously for 3 to 5 seconds.
The light sensor (solar load sensor) located on the top of the instrument panel is used by the automatic climate control system. Your automatic control system uses information provided by the light sensor to adjust the temperature in your vehicle. Do not cover this sensor.
When the system is set for automatic operation, sensors will control the air delivery mode. Air will come from the floor, middle or windshield outlets. The fan speed may vary as the system maintains the selected temperature setting. Be careful not to put anything over the light sensor (solar load sensor) located in the middle of instrument panel near the windshield. The sensor is used by the automatic system to regulate temperature.
To find your comfort zone, start with a 71°F (21.7°C) set point and allow about 2-3 minutes for the system to regulate. Turn the temperature knob to adjust the temperature as necessary in small increments of 1-2 degrees. If you choose a 60°F (16°C) set point, the system will remain at that maximum cooling setting and will not regulate fan speed. If you choose a 90°F (32°C) set point, the system will remain at a maximum heating setting and will not regulate fan speed. Choosing either maximum setting will not cause the system to heat or cool any faster.
With the automatic setting, the air conditioning compressor automatically cycles when needed to cool the air. In cold weather, when the system senses the need, airflow will be directed out through the floor outlets.
As the interior temperature approaches a desired setting, the blower speed will decrease. To maintain interior comfort, the airflow may move to the instrument panel air outlets and the floor outlets (bi-level mode). On bright and sunny days in cod weather, the air flow may come out of the air conditioning outlets (A/C mode) to maintain comfort and prevent stuffiness.
If your vehicle is sitting out on a hot day and you have it set on Auto, the air will flow through the floor outlets for a few seconds to expel hot air from the outlets. This is normal Airflow will resume to air conditioning outlets as the air cools down. If you start the vehicle with the fan setting on HI, it will skip the air conditioning purge.
To avoid blowing cold air in cold weather the system will delay turning on the fan until warm air is available. The length of the delay depends on the outside air temperature engine coolant temperature or the time since the engine was last started. As the engine coolant warms up, the blower speed will gradually increase and air flow from the heater outlets, with some airflow to the windshield to prevent fogging under most normal conditions. If you leave your vehicle, the system will remember the control setting the next time you start the engine.
This knob changes the temperature of the air coming through the system. Turn this knob right (clockwise) or to the red section for warmer air. Turn the knob left (counterclockwise) or to the blue section for cooler air.
(Fan Control Switch): This switch sets the fan speed. Select the force of air your want by moving the switch. If you move the switch to OFF, the fan will be off. When the button are pushed, indicator light will light. This setting recirculates and cools the inside air.

To heat the mirrors and defog the rear window, press the rear defogger switch located in your air conditioning control unit. An indicator light above the rear defogger switch will be illuminated while the rear defogger and heated mirrors are on.
After the rear defogger switch is pressed the first time, the heated mirrors and defogger will remain on for 15 minutes or until either the defogger switch is turned off or the ignition switch is turned to either "ACC' or "OFF" position.
