Service Wrench Lamp Illuminated with DTC P1811 Stored

Subject:Service Wrench Lamp Illuminated with DTC P1811 "Maximum Adapt and Long Shifts" (Inspect Transaxle and Install New TCM Calibration 24222073)

Models:2000 Saturn L-Series vehicles equipped with V6 (L81) engine and automatic transaxle (MN5)

Condition

Service Wrench lamp illuminated with DTC P1811 "Maximum Adapt and Long Shifts." Vehicle will also have full line pressure shifts when DTC P1811 is set.

Cause

DTC P1811 will set if any adapt cell is at maximum and any shift time reaches .65 seconds. In the original 2000 model year TCM calibration, cruise shifts were commanded to have a shift time of zero (0) seconds so the adaptives would max out for shifts made in cruise. If any other shift cell shows a long shift time, the DTC will set.

Correction

Check the pressure control solenoid function with the line pressure test below. If the pressure control (PC) solenoid passes, install TCM calibration 24222073. Otherwise, replace PC solenoid and install TCM calibration.

Service Procedure

Test drive vehicle with Tech 2. Evaluate shift times (1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts). Are any times greater than 0.65 seconds?

    • If none of the shift times exceed 0.65 seconds, reflash TCM with calibration 24222073. Repair is complete at this time.
    • If one or more shift times exceed 0.65 seconds, perform the line pressure test below.

Line Pressure Test

    Object Number: 892998 Size: SH

Caution: Keep brakes applied at all times in order to prevent unexpected vehicle motion.

Notice: Total test running time should not be longer than two minutes. Otherwise, transmission damage could occur.

Important: Line pressures are calibrated for two sets of gear ranges --- Drive-Park-Neutral and Reverse. This allows transaxle line pressure to be appropriate for different pressure needs in different gear ranges:

Important: The Scan tool is only able to control the pressure control (PC) solenoid in Park and Neutral with vehicle stopped. This protects transaxle clutches from extremely high or low pressure in Drive or Reverse ranges.

  1. Hook up Scan tool.
  2. Start engine and set parking brake.
  3. Check for stored diagnostic trouble codes, including the diagnostic code for a pressure control solenoid.
  4. Repair vehicle if necessary. Include the following areas:
  5. • Inspect fluid level.
    • Inspect manual linkage at transaxle.
    • Install or connect Scan tool.
  6. Remove the line pressure tap plug and install SA9127E to transaxle.
  7. Put gear selector in Park and set parking brake.

  8. Start engine and allow engine to warm up at idle.
  9. Access PC Solenoid Control test on Scan tool.
  10. Slowly increase engine speed to 1100-1300 rpm and maintain this engine speed throughout the test.
  11. Increase PC solenoid amperage in 0.1 amp increments. Read and record corresponding line pressure on pressure gauge. Allow pressure to stabilize for five seconds after each current change.
  12. Important: Before reinstalling the line pressure tap plug, apply Loctite 242® to the thread of the plug.

  13. Remove Gauge Bar Set (SA9127E) and install the line pressure tap plug.
  14. Important: The pressures in the table assume a temperature of 70°C (150°F). The pressure will vary at different temperatures.

  15. Compare your data to the line pressure table.

* Approximate Line Pressure is measured at an engine speed of 1100-1300 rpm.

14. If the pressures recorded are within the ranges in the above chart, and the pressures did stabilize with current change, refer to the 2000 L-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual to diagnose the cause of the long shift time. Reflash TCM with calibration 24222073.

15. If the pressure recorded does not match with the chart above or the pressures do not stabilize:

    • Refer to the automatic transaxle service manual and replace the pressure control solenoid.
    • Reflash TCM with calibration 24222073.

Warranty Information

To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for K5364 (TCM - Reprogramming), or K6353 (Solenoid, Pressure Control - Replace). An add time for reprogramming the Pressure Control Solenoid is assigned to K6353 for TCM Reprogramming. When another procedure is performed that requires TCM Reprogramming, K5364 must be claimed as a "related line" to that repair. Diagnostic time is to be claimed as straight time using labor operation J9995 and submitted as a related line to the repair.

Important: Installation of the line pressure tap plug requires the use of Loctite 242® [P/N 21485277 (in Canada, P/N 10953489)]. Claims received in the amount of retailer cost, plus 40 percent parts allowance will be accepted for the material to perform the repair. It will be necessary to sell Loctite 242® to the CSO as material, using net item code "M." Claims exceeding the amount of $.50 (cost $.35 x 1.4 parts allowance) will be returned with reason 143 --- material amount greater than maximum allowed.
