Information on Servicing Lock Cylinder Components

This bulletin is being updated with additional information about servicing vehicles with old-design lock sets. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-64-020 (Section 08 - Body & Accessories).

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform Saturn Retailers of a change to service parts availability for Saturn ION lock cylinder components. The current lock cylinder kits for the doors, rear compartment and ignition cylinder will be modified to now include additional component parts to build up a complete ignition, door or rear compartment lock cylinder assembly.

The new lock cylinder kits listed in the Parts Information table can be used to replace or repair lock cylinder assemblies on ION sedans built after VIN breakpoint 5Z143105 and ION coupes built after VIN breakpoint 5Z147894. These new design lock cylinders contain new aluminum tumblers instead of brass tumblers and have a different coating on the cylinders.

Important: To service all lock sets on Saturn IONs built prior to and including VIN breakpoints 5Z143105 (sedan) and 5Z147894 (coupe), refer to pages 9-54 through 9-57 in the Saturn ION Parts and Illustration catalog for appropriate part numbers. Do NOT mix and match new aluminum tumblers and hex chrome-free coated cylinders with old brass tumblers and hex chrome-coated cylinders.

Once inventory of these individual component parts from pages 9-54 through 9-57 in the Saturn ION Parts and Illustration catalog are depleted, the new lock cylinder kits, P/Ns 15785081, 15785082, 15785083 and 15785084 can also be used on IONs built prior to VIN breakpoint 5Z143105 (sedan) and 5Z147894 (coupe) as long as the complete ignition lock cylinder, door lock cylinder or rear compartment lock cylinder is replaced. (It is not necessary to replace all lock cylinders on a vehicle when servicing only one particular lock cylinder.)
