If Your Key Seems Stuck In OFF/LOCK and You Can't Turn It

Be sure you are using the correct key; if so, is it in all the way? If it is, then turn the steering wheel left and right (even if it is locked) while you turn the key hard. But turn the key only with your hand. Using a tool to force it could break the key or the ignition switch.

If none of this works, then your vehicle needs servicing.

Shift Lock Release

This vehicle is equipped with an electric shift lock release system. The shift lock release is designed to do the following:

    • Prevent the ignition key from being removed unless the shift lever is in PARK (P), and
    • Prevent movement of the shift lever out of PARK (P) unless the ignition is in a position other than LOCK. The shift lock release is always functional except in the case of a dead battery or low voltage (less than 9 V) battery.

The following procedure allows the ignition to be turned to LOCK and for ignition key removal in case of a dead battery or low voltage battery for vehicles equipped with a column shift lever.

  1. Make sure the shift lever is in PARK (P).

  2. Object Number: 1223854 Size: B3
  3. Using a tool, pry off the cover from the bottom of the steering column.

  4. Object Number: 1223856 Size: B3
  5. Place your finger into the access hole and locate the plunger.
  6. Press and hold the plunger toward the driver's door while turning the ignition key to LOCK. Remove the key.

Have your vehicle serviced at your retailer as soon as possible.

The following procedure is used to shift the transaxle out of PARK (P) in case of a dead battery or low voltage battery.

  1. Turn the ignition to LOCK and remove the key.
  2. Carefully pry the shift lock override cover from the floor shift console.

  3. Object Number: 1233262 Size: B3
  4. Insert the end of your ignition key into the slot and press down firmly.
  5. Apply the brake and move the shift lever to NEUTRAL (N).
  6. While maintaining brake application, start the vehicle and move the shift lever into the desired gear position.
  7. Have the vehicle fixed as soon as possible.
