Subject: | Low Coolant Message Displayed |
Models: | 2008 Saturn Astra |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
A technician may find a low coolant message. They may have replaced the sensor with no change and the reservoir is properly filled.
The coolant level sensor calibration may be too sensitive to the coolant level. A new sensor calibration is being developed, but is not available at this time. Until the new calibration is available, a service procedure has been developed.
With the vehicle cold, raise the coolant level 1/2inch above the cold fill line. Breakpoints for the introduction of the new software are:

Note: This situation may be exaggerated by driving the vehicle over 4000 rpm for an extended period, then parking vehicle and setting overnight. When started in the morning, a foaming condition coupled with high flow through the reservoir may cause the low coolant light to display. As the coolant is warmed, the level increases, the thermostat opens and the surge tank flow rate is substantial decreased. This will cause the issue not be present anymore and not reproducible with warm engine/coolant.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
