Did you review the Instrument Panel, Gages and Console Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections?

Verify that the fuel gage is inaccurate or inoperative.

Does the fuel gage operate normally?

--

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

  1. Disconnect the fuel sender connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

Does the gage read empty?

--

Go to Step 4

With the fuel sender connector still disconnected and the key still in the ON position, connect terminals 2 and 3 on the vehicle side of the connector.

Does the fuel gage read full?

--

Go to Step 5

  1. Remove the sender from the fuel tank
  2. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 3 of the fuel sender connector for each float position.

Does the fuel gage indicate the appropriate reading at the specified resistance values?

Full - 4 Ω

1/2 - 205 Ω

Empty - 400 Ω

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Test for an open or high resistance in the low fuel indicator circuits between the fuel level sensor and instrument panel cluster (IPC).

Does an open or high resistance condition exist?

Repair the open or high resistance in the low fuel indicator circuit between the fuel level sensor and IPC. Refer to Wiring Repairs.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 10

Replace the fuel sender. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement for the 1.8 L engine or Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement for the 2.4 L engine.

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
