Road test the vehicle in order to verify the customer complaint.

Does the vehicle operate normally?

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Inspect the tires and the wheels for damage. Refer to Tire Diagnosis - Irregular or Premature Wear and to Tire and Wheel Assembly Runout Measurement - On-Vehicle .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 11

  1. Install the J 39570 Chassis Ear.
  2. Road test the vehicle in order to verify the noise is from the wheel bearings.

Is the noise from the front wheel bearings?

--

Go to Step 9

Is the noise from the rear wheel bearings?

--

Go to Step 10

  1. Remove the front brake rotors. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement.
  2. Important: Support the front suspension in order to prevent movement while inspecting the wheel bearing and hub assembly.

  3. Place jack stands under the front lower control arms. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Install the J 8001 Dial Indicator.
  5. Verify the J 8001 contacts the hub flange.
  6. Push and pull on the hub in order to inspect the total travel indicated by the dial indicator.

Is the measurement greater then the specified value?

0.03 mm (0.001 in)

  1. Remove the rear brake rotors. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement.
  2. Important: Support the rear suspension in order to prevent movement while inspecting the wheel bearing and hub assembly.

  3. Place jack stands under the rear suspension. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Install the J 8001 Dial Indicator.
  5. Verify the J 8001 contacts the hub flange.
  6. Push and pull on the hub in order to inspect the total travel indicated by the dial indicator.

Is the measurement greater then the specified value?

0.05 mm (0.002 in)

Determine if the wheel hub and axle flange has excessive runout. Refer to Hub/Axle Flange and Wheel Stud Runout Inspection .

Did you replace a wheel hub and axle flange with excessive runout?

Replace the front wheel bearing. Refer to Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 11

Replace the rear wheel bearing. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement.

Did you complete the repair?
