Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Place a drain pan or a suitable container under the transaxle.

  3. Object Number: 244162  Size: SH
  4. Remove the transaxle oil level/filler plug (1) from the transaxle.
  5. Remove the transaxle drain plug (2) from the transaxle.
  6. Drain the transaxle oil.
  7. Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  8. Remove the drive axle shaft oil seal from the transaxle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Use the J 35538 and a hammer in order to install a new wheel drive shaft oil seal (1):
  2. Apply J 36850 to the new drive axle shaft oil seal lip.
  3. Inspect the drive shaft sealing surface at the location of contact between the seal and the drive axle.
  4. The drive axle surface should meet the following conditions:

    • Smooth
    • Free of scoring
    • Free of burrs
  5. Replace the wheel drive shaft if the sealing surface of the shaft is rough or scored. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  6. Install the oil seal into the transaxle.
  7. Important: The right oil seal installation depth should be approximately 1.6-2.2 mm (0.063-0.087 in).

    The left oil seal installation depth should be approximately 0.6-1.2 mm (0.027-0.051 in).

  8. Install the wheel drive shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the transaxle drain plug (2) with a new gasket into the transaxle.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle drain plug to 39 N·m (29 lb ft).

  12. Add approximately 1.9 liters (2.0 qts) of API GL-4 or GL-5 SAE 75W-90 or the equivalent, into the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole.
  13. Ensure that the oil level is even with the bottom of the transaxle oil level/filler plug hole.

  14. Install the transaxle oil level/filler plug (1) into the transaxle.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle oil level/filler plug to 39 N·m (29 lb ft).

  16. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
