DEFINITION: The starter solenoid clicks but the engine does not crank or cranks slowly.

  1. Connect the voltmeter to positive and negative battery terminals
  2. Turn the ignition to START.
  3. Crank the engine for 15 seconds.

Is the reading greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

Go to Step 2

Measure the voltage between the B- and the engine block while the engine is cranking.

Is the reading less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Load test the battery. Refer to Battery Load Test.

Is the battery OK?

Replace the negative battery cable

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 5

Measure the voltage between the B+ and the starter solenoid B terminal while cranking the engine.

Is the reading less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 6

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement.

Replace the positive battery cable.
