Subject:05 2.2L L61 Rattle or Scrapping Noise from the Front of the Engine

Models:.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Rattle or Scrapping Noise From the Front of the Engine - This noise occurs at very low mileage and may even occur prior to delivery to a retail customer. The noise occurs at the front (right hand side) of the engine. The noise occurs because the timing chain tensioner is inoperative. Remove the timing chain tensioner from the block and inspect the tensioner and block for debris, such as aluminum chips. If chips are found, disassemble the tensioner and inspect for chips inside the tensioner. If any chips are found inside the tensioner, replace the tensioner. If there are not any chips inside the tensioner, thoroughly clean the block and tensioner and reinstall the original tensioner, following the procedures detailed in Service Information.
