Engine Replacement Automatic Transmission

Tools Required

J 42451 Engine Lift Bracket

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 785334  Size: SH
  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the air inlet duct and resonator (2). Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls-2.2L.

  4. Object Number: 792955  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the accelerator and cruise control cable. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).
  6. Disconnect the brake booster hose at the brake booster.

  7. Object Number: 631999  Size: SH
  8. Remove the power steering pump bolts and set pump aside.
  9. Disconnect fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Engine Compartment in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).
  10. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

  12. Remove the radiator inlet hose (3). Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  13. Remove surge tank to cylinder head hose (2).
  14. Disconnect the surge tank to radiator outlet hose (1).
  15. Remove the bolt retaining the surge tank outlet hose to the intake manifold.

  17. Remove the radiator outlet hose (1). Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  18. Object Number: 786506  Size: SH
  19. Remove the inlet heater hose (1) and outlet heater hose (2). Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement and to Heater Outlet Hose Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  20. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
  21. • Idle air control (IAC) motor
    • Throttle position (TP) sensor
    • Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Purge solenoid
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • O2 sensor
    • Vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
    • Engine temperature sensor
    • Back-up lamp switch

  22. Unclip the electrical harness from the engine and set aside.
  23. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  24. Remove the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  25. Remove the AC compressor bolts and set the compressor aside.
  26. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  27. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.
  28. Disconnect the starter electrical connectors.
  29. Drain the engine oil.
  30. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  31. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  32. Object Number: 475919  Size: SH
  33. Remove the flywheel to torque convertor bolts.

  34. Object Number: 104580  Size: SH
  35. Remove the lower transmission bellhousing bolts.

  36. Object Number: 510437  Size: SH
  37. Remove the transmission to engine brace.
  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Install J 42451 to the right rear of the cylinder head.
  40. Install an engine hoist to the engine.
  41. Remove the bolts which secure the bracket to the engine mount.
  42. Remove the upper transmission bellhousing bolts.
  43. Separate the engine and the transmission.
  44. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  45. Remove the engine flywheel.
  46. Mount the engine to an engine stand.
  47. Remove the following components:
  48. • Oil filter cap and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Exhaust manifold studs
    • Intake manifold
    • Intake manifold studs
    • Engine mount bracket
    • Engine lift bracket
    • Camshaft cover and seal
    • Fuel rail
    • Engine block heater
    • Water pump
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Thermostat housing and feed pipe
    • Generator
    • Oil level indicator and tube
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • Crankshaft balancer
  49. Remove the engine from the stand.
  50. Remove J 42451 .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install J 42451 to the right rear of the cylinder head.
  2. Mount the engine to a stand.
  3. Install the following components:
  4. • Oil filter cap and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
    • Exhaust manifold studs
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Intake manifold studs
    • Intake manifold
    • Engine mount bracket
    • Engine lift bracket
    • Camshaft cover and seal
    • Fuel rail
    • Engine block heater
    • Water pump
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Thermostat housing and feed pipe
    • Generator
    • Oil level indicator and tube
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • Crankshaft balancer
  5. Install an engine hoist to the engine.
  6. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
  7. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  8. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  9. Align the engine to the transmission.

  10. Object Number: 104580  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the upper bell housing bolts
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  13. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  14. Remove the engine hoist.
  15. Remove J 42451 .
  16. Raise the vehicle.
  17. Install the lower bell housing bolts.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  19. Install the torque convertor bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the torque convertor bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  21. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  22. Object Number: 510437  Size: SH
  23. Install the brace from the transmission to the engine.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the brace bolts to 72 N·m (53 lb ft).

  25. Connect the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  26. Connect the generator electrical connectors.
  27. Connect the starter electrical connectors.
  28. Install the AC compressor to the engine. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  29. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  30. Lower the vehicle.
  31. Connect the following electrical connectors:
  32. • IAC motor
    • TPS
    • Map sensor
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Purge solenoid
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • O2 sensor
    • Vehicle speed sensor
    • Engine temperature sensor

  33. Install the radiator inlet hose (3). Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  34. Install the hose from the surge tank to the cylinder head (2).
  35. Connect the outlet hose from the surge tank to the radiator (1).
  36. Install the bolt securing the surge tank outlet hose to the intake manifold.

  38. Install the radiator outlet hose (1). Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  39. Object Number: 786506  Size: SH
  40. Install the inlet (1) and outlet (2) heater hoses. Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement and to Heater Outlet Hose Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.

  41. Object Number: 631999  Size: SH
  42. Install the power steering pump.
  43. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump bolts to 25 N·m (19 lb ft).

  44. Connect the accelerator and cruise control cables. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).
  45. Connect the brake booster hose.
  46. Connect the fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Engine Compartment in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).

  47. Object Number: 785334  Size: SH
  48. Install the air inlet duct and resonator. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).
  49. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  50. Connect the negative battery cable . Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  51. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  52. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement .

Engine Replacement Manual Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

  3. Object Number: 785334  Size: SH
  4. Remove the air inlet duct and resonator (2). Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls-2.2L.

  5. Object Number: 792955  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the accelerator and cruise control cable. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).
  7. Disconnect the hose from the brake booster.

  8. Object Number: 631999  Size: SH
  9. Remove the power steering pump bolts and set the pump aside.
  10. Disconnect the fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Engine Compartment in Engine Controls - 2.2L (L61).
  11. Disconnect the transmission shift control cables.
  12. Disconnect the clutch actuator cylinder to the transmission. Refer to Clutch Actuator Cylinder Replacement in Manual Transmission.
  13. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

  15. Remove the radiator inlet hose (3). Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  16. Remove the hose from the surge tank to the cylinder head (2).
  17. Disconnect the outlet hose from the surge tank to the radiator (1).
  18. Remove the bolt retaining the cooling system fill hose to the intake manifold.

  20. Remove the radiator outlet hose (1). Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  21. Object Number: 786506  Size: SH
  22. Remove the inlet (1) and outlet (2) heater hoses. Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement and to Heater Outlet Hose Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  23. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
  24. • IAC motor
    • TPS
    • MAP sensor
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Purge solenoid
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • O2 sensor
    • Vehicle speed sensor
    • Engine temperature sensor
    • Back-up lamp switch

  25. Unclip the electrical harness from the engine and set the harness aside.
  26. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  27. Remove the front suspension crossmember . Refer to Crossmember Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  28. Remove the drive axles. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Front Wheel Drive Shafts.
  29. Remove the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  30. Remove the AC compressor bolts and set the compressor aside.
  31. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.
  32. Disconnect the starter electrical connectors.
  33. Drain the engine oil.
  34. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  35. Use a block of wood to support the front of the engine at the front of the oil pan.
  36. Lower the vehicle onto an engine support table.
  37. Remove the bolts which secure the bracket to the engine mount.
  38. Remove the bolts which secure the transmission mount to the frame. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement and Transmission Mount Replacement - Side in Manual Transmission.
  39. Raise the vehicle away from the engine and transmission assembly.
  40. Install J 42451 to the right rear of the cylinder head.
  41. Install an engine hoist to the engine.
  42. Remove the transmission bellhousing bolts.
  43. Separate the engine and the transmission.
  44. Remove the clutch pressure plate and disk.
  45. Remove the engine flywheel.
  46. Mount the engine to an engine stand.
  47. Remove the following components:
  48. • Oil filter cap and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
    • Exhaust manifold studs
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Intake manifold studs
    • Intake manifold
    • Engine mount bracket
    • Engine lift bracket
    • Camshaft cover and seal
    • Fuel rail
    • Engine block heater
    • Water pump
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Thermostat housing and feed pipe
    • Generator
    • Oil level indicator and tube
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • Crankshaft balancer
  49. Remove the engine from the stand.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install J 42451 to the right rear of the cylinder head.
  2. Mount the engine to a stand.
  3. Install the following components:
  4. • Oil filter cap and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
    • Exhaust manifold studs
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Intake manifold studs
    • Intake manifold
    • Engine mount bracket
    • Engine lift bracket
    • Camshaft cover and seal
    • Fuel rail
    • Engine block heater
    • Water pump
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Thermostat housing and feed pipe
    • Generator
    • Oil level indicator and tube
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • Crankshaft balancer
  5. Install an engine hoist to the engine.
  6. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
  7. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  8. Install the clutch pressure plate and disk.
  9. Install the engine to the transmission.
  10. Install the engine and transmission assembly to an engine support table. Use a block of wood under the front of the engine to support the engine.
  11. Remove the engine hoist.
  12. Remove J 42451 .
  13. Position the engine support table under the vehicle.
  14. Lower the vehicle while aligning the engine and transmission mounts to the vehicle.
  15. Install the bolts which secure the transmission mount to the frame. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement and to Transmission Mount Replacement - Side in Manual Transmission.
  16. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  17. Raise the vehicle.
  18. Connect the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  19. Connect the generator electrical connectors.
  20. Connect the starter electrical connectors.
  21. Install the AC compressor to the engine. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  22. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  23. Install the drive axles. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Front Wheel Drive Shafts.
  24. Install the front suspension cross member. Refer to Crossmember Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Connect the following electrical connectors:
  27. • IAC motor
    • TPS
    • MAP sensor
    • Crankshaft sensor
    • Camshaft sensor
    • Oil pressure sensor
    • Purge solenoid
    • Ignition coil and module assembly
    • O2 sensor
    • Vehicle speed sensor
    • Engine temperature sensor

  42. Connect the brake booster hose at the brake booster.

  48. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  49. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.
