Diagnostic Aids

The ignition lock cylinder may be the source of the short to ground in the ignition switch. With the ignition switch is still connected, remove the ignition switch from the ignition lock cylinder. If the chime stops, the ignition lock cylinder needs to be inspected. Physically examine the ignition lock cylinder for any stuck out pins or plunger that may cause a short to ground in the ignition switch.

Are any indicators illuminated?

Go to Symptoms - Instrument Panel, Gages and Console

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Turn the headlamp switch to OFF.
  3. Remove the key from the ignition.
  4. Open the driver door.

Does the chime sound?

Go to Step 4

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the ignition switch.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  5. With a scan tool, observe the Key in Ignition parameter in the Body Control Module (BCM) data list.

Does the Key in Ignition parameter display Off?

Go to Step 6

Test the key in ignition signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

Did you complete the replacement?

Important: Program the replacement BCM.

Replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control System.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
