Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan.

  3. Object Number: 104518  Size: SH
  4. Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and the sides only.
  5. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts approximately 4 turns.
  6. Notice: Pry the oil pan down carefully in order to prevent damage to the transmission case or the oil pan sealing surfaces.

  7. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet or pry in order to allow the oil to drain.
  8. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts.

  10. Remove the oil pan.

  12. Remove the oil pan gasket.

  14. Remove the oil filter.
  15. Remove the oil filter O-ring seal.
  16. Inspect the O-ring seal. The O-ring seal may be stuck in the case.
  17. Remove all traces of old gasket material. Clean the transmission case and the oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent, and allow to air dry.
  18. Inspect the oil pan for damage that may cause leaks. Replace the oil pan if necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the seal with a small amount of J 36850 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 104522  Size: SH
  3. Install a new seal into the case.
  4. Install a new filter into the case.

  5. Object Number: 104521  Size: SH
  6. Install a new oil pan gasket.

  7. Object Number: 104519  Size: SH
  8. Install the oil pan.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the oil pan bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb ft).

  12. Inspect the oil pan bolts and the washers.
  13. Use adhesive and sealant compound GM P/N 12345382, or equivalent.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON®-III oil.
  16. Adjust the cold oil level reading for the initial fill. Do not overfill. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  17. Inspect the oil pan gasket for leaks.
