GENERATOR WILL NOT CHARGE AT IDLE (RESISTANCE WIRE)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 Pontiac 'J' Car With U14 Gauge Cluster Before VIN G7 522339

CONDITION:

---------- 1986 Pontiac 'J' Car with U14 gauge cluster (gauges without tachometer) will not charge the battery at idle. The generator will self-charge when the engine RPM exceeds approximately 2500, and will remain charging until the ignition is turned off.

CAUSE:

----- I.P. harness is missing the wire to turn on the generator.

CORRECTION:

---------- Add a wire in the engine wire harness to turn on the generator using the procedure below:

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. In the engine wire harness, locate the dark brown wire and the dark brown with double white stripe wire (see Figure 1). Cut both wires about 250mm (5 inches) from the bulkhead connector.

3. Add 1.52M (five feet) of resistance wire as shown in Figure 2. The precut resistance wire is available from GM PARTS as P/N 12058447. Connectors should be soldered, and sealed with 4.76mm (3/16 inches) shrink tubing.

4. Reconnect negative battery cable.

5. Start engine and check that generator is charging at normal idle speed (approximately 14 to 15 volts).

6. Fold excess resistance wire into conduit and replace conduit into original position.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
