PRODUCT CAMPAIGN:IDLE STOP A/T SOLENOID JUMPER WIRE -PHOENIX

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1981 PONTIAC PHOENIX EQUIPPED WITH A V-6 ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND AIR CONDITIONING WERE ASSEMBLED WITHOUT THE REQUIRED IDLE STOP JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY (INCLUDING DIODE). WITHOUT A DIODE AND WHEN THE SOLENOID IS DE ENERGIZED, A VOLTAGE TRANSIENT IS GENERATED IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SUFFICIENT TO "RESET" THE ECM (ENGINE COMPUTER COMMAND MODULE). THE RESET ERRONEOUSLY ACTIVATES THE "CHECK ENGINE" LAMP WHICH IS A MISLEADING INDICATION OF SYSTEM FUNCTIONING.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1981 PONTIAC PHOENIX MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A V-6 ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND AIR CONDITIONING ASSEMBLED AT THE FOLLOWING ASSEMBLY PLANT WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE PARAMETERS.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE NOT TO BE SOLD BY THE DEALER UNTIL CAMPAIGN MODIFICATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

NO OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE REQUIRED SINCE ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE IN DEALER STOCK.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. DISCONNECT THE BLUE WIRE WITH WHITE COLORED CONNECTOR FROM THE FAST IDLE SPEED SOLENOID.

2. INSTALL SAME TO BLACK CONNECTOR ON JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY.

3. PLUG JUMPER ASSEMBLY GREEN WIRE WITH A WHITE COLORED CONNECTOR INTO IDLE SPEED SOLENOID.

4. ROUTE BLACK WIRE WITH RING TERMINAL TO WATER PUMP STUD AND CONNECT AS SHOWN.

5. STRAP JUMPER ASSEMBLY TO EXISTING STRAP.

6. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE MODIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE WILL REQUIRE A CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL. EACH LABE PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER, THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE, AND THE DATE VEHICLE WAS CAMPAIGNED. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR BALLPOINT PEN. WHEN INSTALLING LABEL, CLEAN THE SURFACE OF THE RADIATOR UPPER MOUNTING PANEL AND APPLY THE CAMPAIGN LABEL.

7. THE VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN ARE ALSO INVOLVED IN PRODUCT CAMPAIGN 91-C-03, WHICH IS CURRENTLY BEING PROCESSED AND WILL BE FORWARDED TO YOU VERY SHORTLY. UPON COMPLETION OF THE TWO (20 PRODUCT CAMPAIGNS, DEALERS ARE TO IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THEIR LOCAL PONTIAC ZONE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE CAMPAIGN NUMBERS, DEALER CODE, V.I.N.'S, REPAIR ORDER NUMBERS AND DATES MUST BE GIVEN TO THE ZONE OFFICE MAY TAKE THE NECESSARY STEPS TO HAVE THE FACTORY INVOICE RELEAS- ED FOR THE SPECIFIC VEHICLE. IN SUMMARY, BOTH PRODUCT CAMPAIGNS 81-C-01 AND 81-C-03 MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE INVOICES CAN BE RELEASED.

ENCLOSED WITH YOUR COPY OF THIS BULLETIN ARE THE FOLLOWING:

A LIST OF THOSE VEHICLES INVOLVED, WHICH OUR RECORDS INDICATE ARE IN YOUR GEOGRAPHICAL AREA, IS ATTACHED FOR YOUR FOLLOW UP. ADVISE THE ZONE IF VEHICLES ARREARING ON THE ATTACHED LIST ARE NOT IN YOUR AREA. (IF A LIST OF VEHICLES IS NOT ATTACHED, OUR RECRODS INDICATE NO AFFECTED VEHICLE IN YOUR AREA.)

A SPECIAL COMPUTER DATA CARD (FORM 4425) IS FURNISHED FOR EACH VEHICLE ON YOUR LIST FOR REPORTING COMPLETION. CAMAPGIN IDENTIFICATION LABELS ARE FURNISHED FOR INSTALLATION ON THE RADIATOR UPPER MOUNTING PANEL TO IDENTIFY CARS COMPLETED.

IF A VEHICLE HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED OR SOLD TO ANOTHER LOCATION, PLEASE COMPLETE THE NEW NAME AND ADDRESS SECTION ON THE ENCLOSED FORM 4425 AND FORWARD TO YOUR PONTIAC ZONE OFFICE.

PARTS INFORMATION

ONE IDLE STOP JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY (PART NUMBER 12016335) WILL BE FURNISHED "NO CHARGE" TO YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR EACH VEHICLE ON YOUR V.I.N. LIST.

DEALERS ARE NOT TO ORDER OR RETURN THESE PARTS TO GENERAL MOTORS PARTS

DIVISION.

RECORDING COMPLETION

CAMPAIGN COMPLETION WILL BE RECORDED FROM PROPERLY COMPLETED AND PAID WARRANTY CLAIMS, DEALER COMPLETION OF SEPCIAL COMPUTER DATA CARDS.

THE COMPUTER DATA CARDS FOR THE VEHICLES SHOWN ON YOUR LIST ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS BULLETIN. THIS CARD IS PREPRINTED WITH THE V.I. NUMBER, DEALER CODE AND CAMPAIGN NUMBER. UPON COMPLETION OF THE REPAIR, THE CARD SHOULD IMMEDIATELY BE COMPLETED, INCLUDING SERVICING DEALER CODE, REPAIR ORDER NUMBER, DATE OF REPAIR AND SIGNATURE OF PERSON VERIFYING THE REPAIRS AND FORWARDED TO SERVICE DEPARTMENT, PONTIAC MOTOR DIVISION, ONE PONTIAC PLAZA, PONTIAC, MICHIGAN 48053.

ADDITIONAL CARDS AND CAMPAIGN LABELS ARE AVAILABLE FROM YOUR ZONE OFFICE SERVICE DEPARTMENT.

DEALERS SHOULD STILL SUBMIT WARRANTY CLAIMS FOR CREDIT IN THEIR NORMAL MANNER WHEN THEY PERFORM THE SERVICE AS FOLLOWS:

REPAIRS SUBMITTED FOR VEHICLES NOT INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN WILL NOT BE PAID.
