A few radios may become inoperative due to fluid intrusion into the radio at the wiring harness. A Special Policy has been established to repair radios with this specific condition up to 48 months, regardless of mileage. Removal and reinstallation of receivers beyond the normal 12 month/12,000 mile warranty period must be paid by the customer. AM radios are not covered under the terms of this Special Policy because the wiring harness with which they were assembled does not permit the same fluid intrusion.
When removing a radio from one of these vehicles, inspect the radio and harness connectors. If there is any evidence of corrosion, perform the following:
1. Clean or replace (with part number 1224198) the connectors on the vehicle wiring harness if corroded. This connector can be purchased from AC Delco repair centers.
2. Send the radio to an authorized AC Delco repair center for repair with ACD 1078 warranty claim form.
a. If the radio is still within the normal warranty period of 12 months and 12,000 miles, the repair is to be handled as a normal warranty repair.
b. If the vehicle is beyond the normal warranty period, but still within 48 months of the date of purchase, fill in the "Optional Warranty Limits" box, "Months 48," and the "Nature of Problem" box, "Fluid in Radio."
3. If the radio is within the normal warranty period, removal and reinstallation will be covered by the new car warranty. If it is beyond the normal warranty period, only the repair of damage to the radio due to fluid intrusion is covered under this Special Policy.
4. Customers who have experienced this specific condition prior to the publication of this bulletin, and paid for the repair, should send a copy of the repair bill to:
Service Department M.S. S-101 Delco Electronics Division 700 E. Firmin Street Kokomo, Indiana 46902
Upon approval of the claim, the customer will be reimbursed the amount charged less the normal removal and reinstallation fee.
When reinstalling a radio in one of these vehicles, use the following procedure to minimize the possibility of future fluid intrusion.
a. If the radio does have a strap or hole for a strap (part number 3816659), secure the wires as shown in Figures 1 and 2 shown on the reverse side.
b. If the radio does not have a strap or hole for a strap, use part number 409797 to secure the wires as shown in Figures 3 and 4 on the reverse side.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
