Machining Cross - Drilled Rotors- keywords cut cutting lathe machine turn

Subject:Machining Cross-drilled Rotors

Models:2005-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP

This PI was superceded to include 2008 model year. Please discard PIC3487B.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Cross-drilled brake rotors are being used on the 2005 1/2 - 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. Cross-drilling contributes to the venting of heat, gases, and dust during braking. If required, these brake rotors can be machined on a lathe in a similar manner to standard rotors.

Recommendation/Instructions:

When cutting rotors, use positive rake tooling on the lathe. Positive rake tooling requires less cutting pressure, reduces chatter, and improves surface finish. When setting up the brake lathe, be sure to use a vibration dampener/silencer.

Using SI procedures, apply a non-directional finish to the rotor surface after machining by using a sanding block and 150-grit aluminum oxide sandpaper.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
